Introduction: Lovely Baby Booties

These booties are knitted top down. They make a great gift to the mother of any newborn.

Needed material: about 1 skein (50 gr.) of yarn, a set of 5 double pointed needles (size suitable for the chosen yarn) and a tapestry needle.

The following abbreviations are used in this pattern. Good luck with knitting your new monstrous friend and enjoy his company.

Sts - Stitches;
BO - Bind off;
Dpn - Double pointed needles;
RS - Right side;
CO - Cast on;
WS - Wrong side;
Sl - Slip;
P - Purl;
K2tog - Knit 2 stitches together;
K - Knit;
Inc - Increase;
YO - Slip yarn over/around needle.

Step 1: The Cuff of the Booty

CO 32 sts and knit a cuff that is 7 cm. long; Row 1 - K; Row 2 - *K2tog, YO*; Row 3 and 4 - K.

Step 2: Part of the Foot

Then knit the first 8 sts apart from the rest and make sure this part is long enough to pickup 6 sts from the side; Put all of the 44 sts on 4 dpn (that will be respectively 8, 16, 8 and 16 sts on the needles) and knit with a 5th; Row 1 - K; Row 2 to 5 - P; Row 6 to 9 - K; Row 10 to 13 - P.

Step 3: This Is Already the Last Part of It!

Then start decreasing for the sole like this: Row 1 and 3 and 5 - K; Row 2 - k2tog on the start of every needle and K2tog with the last two sts on every needle (you will end up with respectively 6, 14, 6 and 14 sts on the needles); Row 4 - k2tog on the start of every needle and K2tog with the last two sts on every needle (you will end up with respectively 4, 12, 4 and 12 sts on the needles); Row 6 - k2tog on the start of every needle and K2tog with the last two sts on every needle (you will end up with respectively 2, 10, 2 and 10 sts on the needles); BO, weave in loose ends and add a ribbon.

Hi Asters,

Indeed: step 1 is with dpn knitted in the round and after finishing folded over.

Step two starts with knitting back and forth with the mentioned 8 stitches. Those 8 stitches are worked in stockinette stitch: knit on the right side and purl on the wrong side. Let us call this the flap of the upper part of the foot. Continue this until you can pick up 6 stitches on either side of this flap and that way you end up with 44 stitches. That is 2x 6 picked up stitches: 12 plus the 32 we started with.

These 44 stitches are to be knitted with the dpn's as also is described with step 2.

I am sure with this extra information you will get there. If not, please leave another comment and I will get back to you! And of course when you do finish them shortly afterwards, would you show the result of it?

Thanks, Fleur

thanks for clearing that up for me; I'm very visual and sometimes the written directions are a little hard to follow in spots. Now I can finish the boots!

I'm trying out this pattern for a friend who just had a baby. I enjoy knitting and can usually follow a pattern, but there are a couple steps that confuse me in this one. In the list of supplies there are dpn, but the directions don't say to use them until the second part where the foot is formed. Does that mean the cuff is made with single point needles in a flat line? Or is the cuff made in the round with the dpn's? Also, the picture of the finished boot looks like the cuff is rolled over; that step isn't mentioned so I;m not sure if does take place. In the steps with the foot, I understand the increases and decreases, but again the image looks like the top of the foot is knit stitch and the sides are purled. So are the "rows" for each portion of the four dpn's a different stitch or does each "row" complete a round of all needles? I got to the transition between cuff and foot and am very confused.

These little baby booties are adorable! I want to learn how to make some! My friend is pregnant and she would love to have some of these for her baby when she is born! Thanks for sharing.
