Introduction: MESH Kaleidoscope

Create a digital kaleidoscope using Sony's MESH LED block and Move block. The design is very simple: place an LED block at the bottom of the kaleidoscope and use the different orientations of MESH move to customize the lighting patterns of the LED all of which can be programmed in the MESH app.

Materials:

1. x1 MESH LED

2. x1 MESH Move

3. Cardboard

4. Reflective Paper (In this project, I used an aluminum foil but as you'll see soon, it's not the best option. Please use a more reflective material like metallic foil paper, silver paper, or mirror board.)

5. Acrylic Plastic Board

6. Beads or Glitter

7. Black Paper

8. MESH app(Available for free on iOS and Android)

Step 1: Make the Mirror Cardboards.

Cut the cardboard into three long pieces which will combine to make each side of the triangular-cardboard tube of the kaleidoscope. Attach the reflective paper to the cardboard using adhesive.

Step 2: Create the Cardboard Tube of the Kaleidoscope.

Connect the three pieces of cardboard from the previous step to create a triangular cardboard tube (the reflective side of the cardboard should face the inside of the tube).

Step 3: Make a Clear Box for the End Cap of the Kaleidoscope.

1. Cut the acrylic plastic board along with the triangle tube you made at Step 2.

2. Set up the end cap and put in a few beads or some glitter (Note: do not fill up the space and leave room for light the shine through).

Step 4: Connect the Triangle Tube and End Cap.

Connect the triangle tube and end cap in this way.

Step 5: Cut the Black Paper to Cover the Eyepiece at the End of the Tube.

Use black paper to trap the light from MESH LED inside of the triangle tube.

Cut one piece of black paper in the shape of a triangle and with a small hole in the middle to look through and attach it to one end of the kaleidoscope tube. Cut another piece of triangle-shaped black paper with a hole in it to cover the bottom of the clear box at the other end of the tube (this hole will allow the light from the MESH LED block to shine into the clear box and tube).

Step 6: Attach and Program the MESH Blocks.

Attach the MESH LED to the clear box at one end of the kaleidoscope tube (the LED should be aligned with the hole in the middle of the triangle).

Next, attach MESH Move to any side of the triangular tube. MESH Move will be used to detect the orientation of the kaleidoscope and trigger random colors on the MESH LED.

Finally, program MESH LED and Move blocks in the MESH app (no Wi-Fi required). See the image. About MESH: http://meshprj.com/en/
