Introduction: MY EAGLE OWL STEEL ART SCULPTURE

Picture of MY EAGLE OWL STEEL ART SCULPTURE

HERES MY EFFORT AT AN EAGLE OWL FROM STEEL. I STARTED THIS ONE BY MAKING A LOVE HEART SHAPE FROM 8MM ROUND BAR. FROM THERE I BENT SOME MORE ROUND BAR INTO A DOME THEN ADDED ANOTHER 2 THE SAME BUT SLIGHTLY SMALLER. I JOINED THESE WITH 3MM X 30MM FLAT BAR ROLLED INTO CIRCLES WITH THE TOP ONE ROUGHLY 150MM DIAMETER . I FITTED ANOTHER 4 OF THESE WITH THE BOTTOM ONE ABOUT 50MM SMALLER THAN THE TOP. THESE CIRCLES WERE  USED FOR FIXINGS TO TACK THE FEATHERS TO.
ONCE THIS WAS FORMED I ADDED THE" LOVE HEART" FOR THE FACE BRINGING IT SLIGHTLY PROUD OF THE FRONT OF THE BIRD JOINING IT TO THE ARMATURE WITH SMALL CUTS OF ROUND BAR.
TO FORM THE FRAME FOR THE WINGS I AGAIN USED ROUND BAR WELDED TO THE FRAME AT THE BACK OF THE BIRD, KEEP THIS BAR LONG AS THIS LETS YOU STAND BACK AND GET THE PROPORTIONS RIGHT. ABOUT 100MM DOWN ADD ANOTHER BENDING IT UP TO MEET THE TOP ONE. YOU CAN SHAPE THESE WINGS HOWEVER YOU LIKE i.e. FLYING,TAKING OFF, LANDING WHATEVER. OH AND IT PAYS NOW TO GET A PICTURE OF AN OWL IN FLIGHT JUST TO SEE HOW THERE WINGS ARE STRUCTURED, I ACTUALLY GOOGLE AN OWL SKELETON WHICH REALLY HELPS SHAPE THE WINGS
THIS WAS ESSENTIALLY THE MAIN ARMATURE BUILT  SO FROM THERE I GOT THE PLASMA OUT AND STARTED CUTTING THE FEATHERS FROM 1 MM STEEL. IF YOU DO THESE IN WAVES YOU CAN GET 2 LINES OF FEATHERS FROM ONE CUT. YOU CAN MAKE THESE WHATEVER SIZE YOU WANT BUT BELIEVE ME THE BIGGER YOU CAN GET AWAY WITH THE BETTER. TO "FEATHER" THIS BIRD TOOK ME ABOUT 6 HOURS.
NOW THE WINGS... I TOOK MY TAPE AND MEASURED ROUGHLY WERE I THOUGHT THE FEATHERS SHOULD START AND FINISH . SO FOR EXAMPLE IF THE BOTTOM FEATHER WAS FOR ARGUMENTS SAKE 200MM I MEASURED THAT ONTO THE PLATE THEN MEASURED WHAT I THOUGHT THE TOP ONE SHOULD BE e.g. 300mm, MEASURED ROUGHLY THE WING LENGTH THEN DREW THE TAPERED LINE BETWEEN THE 2. I NOW DREW ROUGH FEATHER SHAPES AND CUT THEM OUT.
NOW I TACKED THE FIRST ONE ONTO THE WING FRAME  BENDING THEM ROUND TO THE BOTTOM AND TACKED IT IN PLACE REPEATING THIS PROCESS TO THE TOP. MAKE SURE THE LAST 6 OR SO FEATHERS ARE NOT TACKED TO CLOSE TO THERE ENDS AS ITS GOOD TO BEND THEM OUT FOR EFFECT, CHECK YOUR OWL PICS.
THE FEET:  THESE WERE FAIRLY DIFFICULT AND TIME CONSUMING BUT AGAIN GOOGLE OWL TALONS FOR PICS.
GET A LENGTH OF 6MM ROUND BAR CUT A SMALL BIT SLIGHLY LONGER THAN YOUR VICE, SO YOU CAN WORK ON BOTH ENDS, THEN GET A FLAP DISC AND SHARPEN THE ENDS. NOW TAKE IT OUT OF VICE AND BEND THEM ROUND YOUR VICE END OR ANVIL TO QUARTER CIRCLES CUT THEM OF TO WERE YOU THINK THE CLAWS SHOULD BE. REPEAT THIS 4 TIMES FOR 8 CLAWS.
NOW GET SOME 12MM ROUND BAR, FIT INTO VICE, AGAIN SO YOU CAN WORK ON BOTH ENDS, GET A SMALL GRINDING DISC AND GRIND 2 OR 3 NOTCHES INTO THEM THEN WELD THE CLAWS TO THE ENDS MAKING SURE YOU BLOB THE UNDERSIDE UNDER CLAW WITH WELD. LEAVE THE FIRST ONE YOU DO WITH THE CLAWS ON BOTH ENDS AND CUT IN HALF, THIS IS THE MIDDLE CLAW AND THE REST WILL BE WELDED TO IT, THE OTHER 3 CUT THEM OF AT ANGLES COS THESE WILL BE WELDED TO THE 2 HALFS. MAKE SURE YOU FORM THESE FEET AS PICTURE
NOW THEY ARE MADE JUST WELD THEM TO THE ARMATURE UNDERNEATH THE FEATHERS
I HAVE SINCE FINISHED THE OWL BUT WILL NEED TO ADD PICS LATER BUT FOR THE HEAD FEATHERS I CUT THESE TO POINTS ALL ABOUT 40MM LONG. THE DIFFERENCE IN FEATHER SHAPE GIVES A REAL DRAMATIC LOOK.
FOR THE BEAK I JUST SHARPENED THE ENDS OF THE LOVE HEART SHAPE
THE FACE WAS CUT FROM 1 MM PLATE BOWLED IN SLIGHTLY WITH A BALL PEIN HAMMER, SCORED WITH THE PLASMA IN LINES ( THE TRICK TO THIS IS EITHER TURN YOUR PLASMA TO FULL AMPS, MINIMUM 40 AMP MACHINE, AND LINE WITH OUT THE EARTH OR KEEP THE EARTH ON TURN DOWN AMPS AND QUICKLY LINE THE STEEL) IT HAS A GOUGING EFFECT ON THE STEEL
THE EARS ARE JUST SMALL OF CUTS OF STEEL TACKED ON
GOOD LUCK IF YOU WANNA GIVE IT A GO BUT REMEMBER IT PAYS TO WORK TO PICTURES

This is great, how long does it take you to create these birds from start to finish?

weldalot (author)poofrabbit2012-04-21

ive never ac tually timed making one but the Eagle and fish about 40 hours and maybe 30 for the owl? Ive just started an Osprey and a Little Owl as commissions. The Osprey should be done tomorrow night if I can put the hours in over the weekend

That is actually much faster than I expected you to tell me. I can't wait to see your new stuff, I'm loving it!
