I was talking to my brother a few weeks back and he said that he would like to have a holster to hold two magazines for his handgun, It sounded like a good idea to me so I told him that when I had some free time I would see what I could come up with. This is it.
You will need the following:
paper to draw your pattern onto
pen or pencil
leather that you want to make the holster from
overstitch tool to mark the stitch holes
sewing awl or needle and thread
and of course two magazines of your choice or you could make the holster to fit one magazine if you desired to do so
dye if you choose to dye the holster and sealer
Step 1: Getting Started
the first thing that I did was lay a scrap piece of 1 1/2" belt on the paper then the magazines on top of the belt in the position that I wanted them to sit. I placed them at an angle with the thought that it would be more comfortable when sitting.
I then used my pencil to trace around the magazines and belt.
Measure the magazine thickness at its widest point, (mine is 5/8")divide that by half,( I went with 3/16).
Using this measurement, on the drawing, measure from the sides of the magazines and draw lines. These lines are the stitch lines.
Next measure 3/16" from the lowest point of the magazine and draw the bottom stitch line.
Now measure 1/2" out from the outer stitch lines on the drawing of the belt. Mark this for the 1 1/2" belt slots.
Measure 1/2 inch out from the belt slots and you have the outer edges.
I rounded the corners where the outer lines intersected.
Cut out the pattern that you just made and trace it onto the back of the leather. Make two, front and back, then cut out the leather pieces.
Using contact cement, glue the leather pieces together along the sides and bottom edge, at the belt slot areas and in the middle where the stitch lines are.
Clamp the pieces together and allow to dry.
Use your pattern to mark the leather where the stitch lines will be then using the overstitch tool, mark the stitch line.
Now you can use a awl and punch out the hles you need to sew it up, I use a small drill bit (smaller than the needle in my sewing awl) and drill all the holes.
Now just sew it together.
After I sewed the pieces together, I used a 1 1/2" slot punch and knocked out the belt slots then put some stitches around the slot to make them stronger
Wrap the magazines in plastic cling wrap to protect them from water.
dip the leather into a bowl of water for 7-8 seconds, just enough to make the leather pliable.
Fit the magazines into the holster.
Allow to dry
Now the holster is ready to dye or leave natural if you prefer and sealIadd
