at my college we can grab these ingredients to go from the dining common in a brown paper bag. it is easy to go back to the dorm and leave the sandwich in the bag instead of using sheets of paper.

I have seen it done with a cover of tin foil over the iron, then the paper. Just adds an extra layer of protection in case of very melty cheese...
