Introduction: Make It Extreme's Metal Vise

About: Welcome to the Make it Extreme channel. Our channel aims to provide fun, inspiration and food for thought to our viewers by watching how structures are made in our workshop. Also, by making furniture, engi…

Extremely essential is the tool made in this week’s project and it could not be anything else but a ‘heavy duty metal vise’.

Step 1: Modifications

Starting with its shape, we kept the common shape of the vise applying a few modifications giving our own shape and size considering it as the ideal one for our workshop. Already having 2 big bars that we used in a previous video, the one showing the electromagnetic climbing of a Spiderman, we decided to modify them and use them in this tool too; each bar is 12 cm wide and 16 mm thick.

Step 2: Start

Firstly, we used a metallic flange of 10mm thick and 30cm diameter as a base. Then, we conglutinated many pieces of bars together and we formed the trunk of the vise which has a rectangular hole at the center, in which the mobile part of the vise is dragged. The immobile piece of the vise at the front part has a socket, where grabbers in various shapes are applied and therefore many options are provided to us according to the reason we want to use it and the shapes of the materials that we use to work with.

Step 3: Parts

Also, another socket was created at the mobile part of the vise located exactly at the same height and width with the immobile part of it as a result when the mobile part shuts, the object which is located between them is immobilized. The mobile part is dragged through the hole that exists at the centre of the immobile part by spinning an axis using a thread. The advantage using this method is that we have very few flaws and more power in holding it as well as we manage to be millimetric precise in our work.

Step 4: Done

The axis with the thread that we made on the lathe, was made by stainless steel to avoid creating rust and flaw in this particular, functional piece. Therefore, when the thread is revolved on the right, the mobile part of the vise moves towards the immobile part and the vice versa.

Finally, to achieve enough strength, we made a big lever that gives us the advantage of power to spin the axis with the pashas exerting more strength and in extent holding anything placed in the vise using more power.

Step 5: Video

The total weight of our vise is 204 lbs-92.7kg.
