Measure, Cut, Arrange.
Grab your ribbon and unroll it so that it is long enough to not only cover the front of your canvas length wise, but to also stretch around the sides to the back. If your canvas is 3 feet long and 2 inches deep, you will need to cut lengths of approximately 3 ft, 8 inches so you'll have plenty of surface for stapling in the back.
Continue cutting your ribbon and laying it down on your canvas in loose rows until you've covered the entire canvas, including the top side and bottom side.
When you're happy with your pattern, you're ready to staple it all down.
