it wouldn't be too far fetched of an idea to try and reinforce the cocanut with some kind of resin/fibreglass, but its probably easier to just use a pvc pipe end that twists on.

I will admit though that I really like the look of this setup and I was always told that a magnito from a barbeque would be good to use but this lantern lighter looks way better.

Seems alot easier to ignite.

how long should the pvc barrel be

How creative, using a coconut as a combustion chamber in a mini spud gun. You have to have guts to try something unproven like this. But I'm a bit concern the coconut might explode in my hands after being used for a while. The coconut's shell is thin and its thickness is not the same around it. I'm not sure I would try this.

Hey, ummm, do you want to change the initial message so that it says you DID have a coconut blow up?

how to you fire it???

Instead of a coconut, why not use a pvc drain piece. That way you can have a connector for the barrel, and they are pressure rated. If you do it right, it can still look pretty wicked, and have the same or possibly better results, and some longevity.

instead of a coconut could I use a tennis ball?
Jun 5, 2010. 11:24 AMthebair says:
instead of realeasing the object you might end up with a melted tennis ball!

nope

I have a feeling if you tried to use a tennis ball, you might end up launching it instead of the potato.

maybe

So, if no coconuts are available, what should we use?

isnt the whole soda bottle cap and screw-on apparatus kinda flimsy? didnt it ever explode in your face? just wondering; not that i wanted it to...

since coconut shells burst with too much pressure... you could make a grenade out of one!

i think this is a brilliant version of a 'spud gun'. Mine was made from all PVC and a bigger chamber to spray the hairspray in. With a click button to ignite. Shot a bit father than this. Anyways, great inswtrucitble.

I'm curious as to why you chose a coconut, but I'll add that they don't have very good resistance to internal pressure. I guess the bore of your device is wide enough not to burst the shell, but I have exploded coconuts and they break fairly easily. L

That is brilliance. I want to see instructables on things like that :D

"Coconuts are NOT PRESSURE RATED, were NEVER INTENDED FOR THIS TYPE OF USAGE, and are therefore NOT NECESSARILY SAFE to make a cannon out of"

that made me laugh

Almost guaranteed to explode on you, but I love it - not a great serious cannon but a good decorational piece.
