Introduction: Make a Modular Tesla Valve Out of Foam Clay - a Good Way to Demonstrate Engineering and Physics of Fluids to Kids - OCARINA DESIGN
This is a further design, I actually made.
I was asking myself if a modular tesla valve (from which I guess I am kind of the "inventor" but I confessed I did not looked in the litterature to see if this was done before- I also need to add: the biggest work part was already done by Tesla :-D-
I just modified it adding an innovative feature to it-I like particularly the aspect of self experiencing the effect of various number of tesla valve segments-
I see the potential of those set upsfor applications but the actual competiting valves available allowing a modular control of fluid flows are much simpler and cost effective than this one-
Some applications could be:
for microfluidic - differential distribution of fluids --> one experiment allows addmixing of fluids at various concentrations with aid off several modular tesla valves, for instance-
for new inhalator design based on a pure mechanical design instead of - modular uptake of aerosols or dry powder as a function of needs by the patient or customer --> I need more, I let more flow, I need only a little I let only hardly flow-
So As educative tool,
I show here that you can do circular shaped modular Tesla valve. You can even do the outlets/inlet oriented towards the center or towards the exterior. You can imagine it like an ocarina version of the recorder modular tesla valve I presented before. I like making the link between this valve and existing music instruments.

Step 1: Explanation
The flow is hindered by backdraft loops in the flow path in one direction, whereas in the other it flows limitless (OK, right except friction and tubing size... like woodwind music instrument. very narrow tubing are appropriate for low pressure and high musical notes but a flow that must travel into a one meter long tube of 1 mm diameter would be also quite hindered... I also experienced that by trying to make some woodwind instrument myself) The upper three pictures depict the situation in our design (two segments only). one flow direction (picture 1) is hindered whereas the other not (picture 2) The second row depict more complex situation. Number 3 is close to the initial Tesla valve design (alternating direction of the backdraft loop). Number 4 is a more modern version that you can see when searching for Tesla Valve on the internet (two loops at the same time at the same position).

Step 3: Work Out - Help Notice
Just a short slide to make you clear how you will need to work it out. Once you made and let your first shape dry.
The right part depict the recorder version of the modular Tesla valve. But principally this works pretty likewise.

Step 4: Make the Ocarina Modular Tesla Valve - Outter Version
How to build it:
shape a disc - 2mm thick / 8 cm diameter-,
the disc must be even --> use the CD case and the transparent support to press it evenly to the desired thickness.
Then shape the inner tubing system using the modelling tool (do not shape to deep- avoid modelling through the disc). Let it dry under little weight to keep it as flat as possible.
YOu must obtain something quite close to the image 2.
Then make the surface wet with aid of a wet paper towel picture 3.
Make a 1 mm thick disc slightly larger than the first one. Wet it likewise.
Press both discs -fresh and dried one- against each other. You can use a battery and roll it over them sothat you obtain an even pressure on the whole structure. You must close the system but the tubing part must keep being free. So avoid applying too much pressure.
Then remove excess clay, use wet paper towel to improve the edges situation. You will try to hide the interface between both disc. Keep the opening free of clay.
And let it dry under weight.
Congratulation you did the first ocarina modular Tesla valve.
The big bump in the middle of the valve on picture 5 is actually the inlet. All the edges holes are outlets.
Step 5: Make the Ocarina Modular Tesla Valve - Donut Version
How to build it:
shape a donut - 2mm thick / 8 cm diameter-, the disc must be even --> use the CD case and the transparent support to press it evenly to the desired thickness.
Then shape the inner tubing system as depicted on picture 2 using the modelling tool (do not shape to deep- avoid modelling through the donut).
Actually you need to make holes at specific location as indicated by a stroke on the picture number 2.
Let it dry under little weight to keep it as flat as possible.
Then make the surface wet with aid of a wet paper towel picture 3. Make a 1 mm thick donut slightly larger than the first one. Wet it likewise.
Press both dionuts -fresh and dried one- against each other. You can use a battery and roll it over them sothat you obtain an even pressure on the whole structure. You must close the system but the tubing part must keep being free. So avoid applying too much pressure.
Then remove excess clay, use wet paper towel to improve the edges situation. You will try to hide the interface between both disc. Keep the opening free of clay. And let it dry under weight. Congratulation you did the second ocarina modular Tesla valve.
The Inlet is the big hole oriented downwards on the picture 5. The oulets are directly made on the face itself.
Step 6: Ocarina Modular Tesla Valve - How It Works - Pretty Much Like the Recorder Version
Just to remember you how it works.
The more neighbouring holes you will close, the more difficult will it be for the air to flow through the valve.
The only difference is the outlet position and the inlet one.
