video Make an Airsoft Machine Gun from a Soda Bottle
Several months ago I posted a project showing how to make a 'cloud' BB machine gun with a built in air supply out of PVC. That project, while very entertaining, cost $50 in parts and took several hours to complete. More recently I have resumed experimenting with BB machine gun designs with the goal of making them as inexpensive and easy to build as possible. The model that is made in the above video can be assembled in under 5 minutes, uses only four parts, and costs a total of about $15. If you have not seen my previous BB machine gun project you can take a look at it by clicking This Link.

This airsoft gun is a bullpup design, meaning that the pellets enter the barrel from behind the trigger. The machine gun works because as the bottle is pressurized the only way for the air to escape is through the barrel. That escaping air sucks pellets up and out with it like a high velocity vacuum. The rate of fire that can be achieved through such a design is spectacular, in excess of 50 rounds per second. The estimated FPS using a 6" long barrel is 250 when the bottle is fed with air at 100 PSI. If a longer barrel is used much higher velocities can be achieved.

Parts Required:
  • Soda Bottle
  • 7mm x 6" Automotive Brake Line
  • 1/4" Quick Release Air Compressor Fitting
  • Air Compressor Blow Gun

Tools:
  • Drill & Drill Bits
  • Hot Glue Gun
  • Air Compressor

The only downside to this particular machine gun is that it must be plugged directly into an air compressor line to fire. Fortunately, there are several modifications to this project that remove the need for a constant connection to an air compressor, such as a backpack mounted air tank. A flamethrower style backpack tank version will be featured in my next video, in addition to a modification that requires no access to pressurized air whatsoever, and will cost even less than the featured model.

Until next time,

Would this still work if I made a hole in the back and put my blowgun into the hole at the back of the bottle??

great build. Do you have any ideas where to get the parts though bunnings ,auto place?? i'm not sure if not do you know any other parts you could use as replacements easier found. Thanks

I love to hear people wanting to help kids get into creating things. Have fun! Don't forget the safety glasses!
techsean in reply to NightHawkInLightSep 6, 2012. 11:34 AM
We did use the safety glasses and it worked out fine.

WHERE DO YOU BUY THE BRAKE LINE? D:
shadow_malakai says: Jul 11, 2012. 2:23 AM
I got an idea for a more portable supply. No doubt a lot of viewers who watch this also play paintball, like me. If they have a 48ci 3000psiCompressed Air/Nitrogen Tank or better, they could hook up their feed line to the compressor blower tool. Most people who play with Compressed/N2 air use waistband or backpack harnesses with a slinky hose running to the gun. Just more ideas... LOL.... Have fun guys and remember safety first!!!

Here's an idea: Take a pump and a small air tank, combine it with the air switch and bottle- voila! - DIY airsoft shotgun.

Using your design I modifed an ammo box to build a Browing M1919 thanks for the idea.

I had an idea, what if I used pvc instead of the pop bottle and made the gun look however I wanted. Would it still work do you think?
NightHawkInLight (author) in reply to erfinderMay 1, 2012. 2:13 PM
Yes, that will work.
erfinder in reply to NightHawkInLightMay 1, 2012. 4:49 PM
In your backpack airtank video was the shooting shown all the tank could manage?

I must admit, i am a HUGE fan of your work.
mrpesas says: Feb 22, 2012. 5:47 PM
A couple of ideas came to mind after watching. Could you bend the brake line so that it feed from the bottom of the bottle? This might improve the total number of bb's you can shoot before needing to reload. Also, you could replace the brake line with a stiff hose or plastic tube, if you could find one just the right size.
Jarheadicus in reply to mrpesasMar 21, 2012. 11:01 AM
or you could try and add some kind of hopper on, say, the top of the bottle when holding it in firing position.
NightHawkInLight (author) in reply to mrpesasFeb 22, 2012. 6:15 PM
If you bend the brake line it will change shape around the curve and the pellets will no longer fit through it.

Dude, what is in that target!?
NightHawkInLight (author) in reply to hedzup456Feb 14, 2012. 12:13 PM
It's corn starch sandwiched between aluminum foil and the cardboard box. I have it in there to give a better effect when the pellets hit..
hedzup456 in reply to NightHawkInLightMar 3, 2012. 1:36 AM
I like it. Might steal that idea for my Knex guns, when im showing them off to my mates!
Matthajek says: Feb 28, 2012. 8:19 PM
I made one that uses a 2-Liter bottle and a ball pump connected to the original bottle instead of a compressor or backpack, and it's light, stylish, and very functional! You hold it like darth maul's lightsaber; the "blowgun" (nozzle) is between the two.
bluerogue says: Feb 24, 2012. 7:14 AM
awesome ^^
i am new to this site and i have a little problem where to get the break line is it in carpenter or ........
NightHawkInLight (author) in reply to bluerogueFeb 25, 2012. 10:21 AM
It's a brake line, not break. They can be found in any auto parts store.
bluerogue in reply to NightHawkInLightFeb 26, 2012. 5:38 AM
thank you but is there any place other than auto store

Why thank you
nuketz says: Feb 20, 2012. 12:06 PM
Instead of the Brake Line, would it be possible to use an actual barrel from an airsoft gun? Or is the clearance that the Brake Line provides necessary for the BB's to get sucked through?
NightHawkInLight (author) in reply to nuketzFeb 20, 2012. 1:14 PM
An airsoft barrel will work fine.
Celtophiliamike says: Feb 19, 2012. 6:34 PM
Got bored and whipped one of these together this afternoon... then another one. Love the simplicity of it, and the way it scatters airsoft pellets all over the back yard. Looking forward to your take on a backpack tank, because the necessity of being hooked to the air compressor is about the only thing that keeps this from perfection.
NightHawkInLight (author) in reply to CeltophiliamikeFeb 19, 2012. 7:07 PM
I just published the new video with the backpack modification to my YouTube channel. I'll try to get it posted here within the week, but you can go see it now if you don't want to wait.
Celtophiliamike in reply to NightHawkInLightFeb 20, 2012. 5:15 AM
Sweet, thanks. Your tank runs right along the lines of what I was thinking. What pressure are you filling your tank to, and what kind of longevity are you getting from it? Just based on playing with the guns yesterday attached to my compressor, I'm figuring there's probably about a minute to a minute and a half worth of continuous firing per tank?
ginger20037 says: Feb 17, 2012. 8:11 PM
hehehehe this can be fun :D Just gotta get the barrel... and maybe an extra blow gun attachment or two....
corn holio says: Feb 17, 2012. 6:00 PM
how many psi are you using
NightHawkInLight (author) in reply to corn holioFeb 17, 2012. 7:55 PM
About 100.
benthekahn says: Feb 14, 2012. 9:05 PM
Nice and simple! Instead of wasting airsoft bbs, dried mung beans make a great cheap and biodegradable ammo for these types of guns.
NightHawkInLight (author) in reply to benthekahnFeb 14, 2012. 9:23 PM
While they wouldn't be as close a fit in the barrel and would therefore not have quite the force behind them as airsoft pellets do, I imagine they would work pretty well. I use corn kernels instead of airsoft pellets when making landmines and grenades for games, but prefer to use actual pellets with anything that has a barrel.
brian8t in reply to NightHawkInLightFeb 17, 2012. 8:17 AM
I think those green and orange pellets are biodegradable. Says so on the container anyway.
Madrigorne says: Feb 17, 2012. 2:22 AM
My two cents: I would add a washer both on the inside and outside of the bottle to give added stability and strength where the airline screws in, then the bottle won't have as much wobble when it's full. Heck, you could even drill a hole in Two Pennies and use them as the washers...
NightHawkInLight (author) in reply to MadrigorneFeb 17, 2012. 8:09 AM
It's a good idea, but I don't think the threads on the nozzle tip are long enough to be able to have two washers. You could stabilize it easy enough if you just used some epoxy around the connection though.

Here, in Australia, your final product would actually be in breach of our firearms legislation... but I thought it was funny as hell !!
Skymeat says: Feb 16, 2012. 6:36 PM
Pretty cool! I would have never imagined that would work. I'm going to have to give it a shot.
Colonel Sanders says: Feb 16, 2012. 1:17 PM
I'm hoping with a larger container and barrel I can make a mini marshmallow machine gun!
NightHawkInLight (author) in reply to Colonel SandersFeb 16, 2012. 1:47 PM
So long as they don't get sticky that should work! I bet if you tossed in a spoonful of cornstarch with the mallows that would help them from clumping on you.

Really fits the old saying, "Keep it simple".

Nice design... now I'll have to build one.
Gilo in reply to askjerryFeb 16, 2012. 8:29 AM
Now Boys! Be careful with it. You dont want your Mom pinching you by the ear if you mess up her favorite vase.

I am thinking of getting a half gallon plastic jar and put in six brake hoses for the muzzle.
Gilo says: Feb 16, 2012. 8:23 AM
Bravo! I already can feel the fun just watching the video. I'll build one this weekend.

I had seen it on a number of other sites but I didn't know it had been posted there, thanks for the heads up!
jonnyd55 says: Feb 15, 2012. 2:55 AM
super cool! if you connected two compressors or two paintball tanks to it....would you get twice the air flow and twice the power?
NightHawkInLight (author) in reply to jonnyd55Feb 15, 2012. 9:39 AM
That depends. It might be more effective, but no more so than just using a larger diameter air hose and valve. A much easier way to get more power would just be to use a longer brake line.
mikeasaurus says: Feb 12, 2012. 4:05 PM
Simple and effective. Nice!
rimar2000 says: Feb 14, 2012. 12:48 PM
Very interesting.

I give you an idea, without charging you anything: if you add subtitles, you will gain a lot of people like me, that can understand English when reading it, but not when hearing it. I can assure you that we are millions! Around all the world.
NightHawkInLight (author) in reply to rimar2000Feb 14, 2012. 1:13 PM
Thanks for the advice, I will consider it for future videos.
