Make an awesome Harry Potter wand from a sheet of paper and glue gun glue

Now that Harry Potter fever is upon us once more, I thought you would like to have a go at making some really nice Harry Potter Wands. This is such a simple but effective instructable. With a sheet of paper, some glue and a bit of paint, and about 40 minutes to spare this instructable will show you how you can make a Harry Potter type wand that would not look out of place in the film itself. I designed it and I have already made a load for my kids, even my girlfriend and her 18 year old daughter and her boyfriend wanted one each! For the frist few stages I have drawn pictures of what you have to do and then for the painting part I have taken photos to show you exactly what to do. It's very simple but the effect is fantastic. For more projects like this visit dadcando where there is more Harry Potter type wizarding projects and a load of other craft printables and templates.

If you like this but want more of a challenge which not try it with added magic in the instructable A really magic Harry Potter wand for Lumos and Reveal Your Secrets charms, you get to make a wand with a UV LED at the tip that can reveal secret and otherwise invisible writing. (But I'd try this one first to get the idea).

Has this been stolen? Just saw it on another site, but I knew I'd seen it here before. :/

Thanks so much for that spot. What a cheek. They directly lifted it from here, and dadcando.com (my site) and pretended that it was theirs. I have asked them to remove it. I have no idea if they will. But THANKS for mentioning it.

just tried to go to the link above, it appears to have been removed. :-)

Yes, I asked them to remove it and hey presto! it was gone. Nice to know that things can work out sometimes. Thanks for all your help.

Absolute pleasure! It's always sad to see people steal credit for something that others have put so much effort into, so I'm happy to make sure the rightful owner of the content gets the credit instead. :)

How do you keep the spiral from the paper from showing through? I've tried the spray paint and the latex (emulsion) paint ways but I can still see it. Great tutorial, I've made 5 wands so far, given away 1. Been experimenting on what can and can't be done with the hot glue.
KaptinScarlet (author) in reply to javajunkie1976Oct 14, 2012. 10:04 PM
It always shows a bit. The glue gun hides it up somewhat, also if you choose thinner paper it will show less and if you carefully rub some of the white glue over the surface (i.e. into the spiral join) as it is setting, you will hide up the spiral more.

Thanks for the tip. I'll try it from now on. When I have a chance, I'll upload a photo of what I've done minus the one I gave away.

Waiting on the (brown) paint to dry but this did not take me long at all. To speed up the process right after I started rolling the paper I steped out side and used sprayed adhesive to glue the paper together. Then I finnished rolling the paper and Vola! Dry! Then I just built up the glue where the ball on the wand should be, turning continusly. After the hot glue was dry (almost) I just pushed the tip of the hot glue gun into the balls and Vola! Pok marks.

OK. So I'm a graphic design major and very irritated that I didn't have what I needed just lying around. So here I am scratching my head. 'Silver paint, silver paint what can I use?' Up and dow the hall way, in and out of drawers, craft boxes ect... Gaww!!! I have the spray adhesive for class projects and white paper for my printer, a hot glue gun for craft projects, brown spray paint out of my husbands junk drawer, I have paint pens but NO silver. I have finaly given up and head to the bathroom to wash the brown fleck of paint off my hand when the solution has hit me. I'm a girl.... finger nail polish... dear god, I pray, let there be white or something in there that will work. I unzip the case and there it is PLATINUM... WaHoo!!! Finnished.

That's... Brilliant and very morbid. This is a highly creative take on wands in general. How did you make the wand curved?
lmihalenko says: Jul 31, 2011. 12:15 PM
Thank you so much for your excellent directions! I was able to make 24 beautiful wands for my children's birthday party and everyone loves them!

lmihalenko in reply to lalaluppsyJan 9, 2012. 7:41 PM
Yes, I just followed the instructions given. They were made for my kids' Harry Potter birthday party and each child got one to take home. They loved them!

where do i get a pheonix feather? i know its not required but i want it to work?
evanacker in reply to erodicspongeAug 5, 2012. 1:27 PM
I wanted to do that too, and I just used a little strip of orange(ish) fabric that I tried to fray at the edges, but u might even be able to buy a red feather from a craft store or something. Or u can try other things too... Just use ur imagination. :)

Thanks so much for this tutorial! My boyfriend and I attended a Potter Party for Harry's birthday earlier this week as Tonks and Lupin, so I recreated their wands. They came out great! :)

Does anyone have a picture or know where I can find a pic of the markings on the white part of dumbledore's wand? Thanks!
ETfonehome says: May 3, 2012. 7:51 AM
Hey loox, how did you make the handles on Harry and voldermort's wand? Please respond!
evanacker in reply to ETfonehomeJul 31, 2012. 10:09 AM
I would really like to know that too...
evanacker says: Jul 31, 2012. 10:05 AM
Hi, I know this is an old instuctable, but I was wondering if anybody knew how to make handles for the wands (like for voldemort's and Harry's wands)
jreyes21 says: Jul 28, 2012. 1:50 AM
Can you use Wood Glue or Elmer's glue on this?
Jehnavi24 says: Jul 25, 2012. 5:30 AM
CA Glue - You've given "you know who" the wandlore secret of the elderwand.

Hermione Granger the Know It All says: Jul 3, 2012. 5:26 PM
This is brilliant! Thank you so very much! But can I use the regular glue inside the wand? I don't have anymore glue sticks for my glue gun. And since I don't have that I just used yarn for the decoration. :)
