Step 12: My (but could be your) finished wands

Harry_Potter_wands_425.jpg
I took the photos of my wands (each took about 20 minutes to make) to put on my website (dadcando) as just one of the 100's of fantastic projects available there. Many have printables and templates of the highest quality and are designed for kids to be able to do with their dads or mums.

Have fun making the Wand and send me a picture of any you make so that I can out them up on my website (in the Your Models section). Leave a message here and I'll give you my email address.

Also, can someone post please step by step how to make Dumbledore`s Wand (Elder Wand) Please. I tryed, but it sucks. See on that picture??? It has nothing to do with his wand. So please post.
kenninggd in reply to lordvoldemortJul 29, 2009. 9:37 PM
I did a "Elder Wand" myself and I used a air duster can to blow air into the hot glue. It makes a very cool effect. Hopefully this was helpful.

WOW man, that is awesome!!! how did you do that on surface like skull??? I know that I am asking a lot, but can you PLEASE post tutorial like this how to make that wand. you are gifted definitely. I and my family would really appreciate it. Thanx for everything, you are the best!!!
kenninggd in reply to lordvoldemortAug 1, 2009. 2:34 PM
So I do the steps that are listed, but I ad a dowel as the core and more to the tip so it can be very solid. Then I Take a regular glue gun and go over the whole wand. I use a flat edge tool like a plastic knife and I frost it like a cake. I then make rings around the wand so i know where I want each pocked mark section. Now when you do any of these steps its wise to use a big fan and spin it in front to help cool the glue. I also use a small hand held fan. Once I do these steps I use a small glue gun and do the pocked marks in three sections. The base of each side and the middle. Once I lay the glue down I use an air can and slowly blow air into the glue. Don't do it to hard as it will cause the glue to go everywhere. REMEMBER to keep spinning the wand and do this for EVERY step. Once you blow the air can into the glue it cools fast, but I would still use the fan. Then once I have them all done I spray paint a base color of "October Brown" or whatever you want, and then paint the rest with acrylic paint. You caught me in the middle of making another "Elder Wand". So once it's done I'll post those pictures. I hope this was helpful. I have some pictures too. If you still have any questions please let me know. Thanks for the kind words about this wand. I'm sure my new one will look a lot better. Thanks.

noooo, do you know what you've done.  You've given "you know who" the wandlore secret of the elderwand.  You fool!  It's all over.

any way you must call him 'he who shall not be named'!
corkish in reply to kenninggdAug 17, 2009. 7:25 PM
hey, thanks for the the instructions, but I'm still kind of confused. What exactly do you mean when you say pock marked? And when you make the rings, is it using hot glue? Also, if it is glue, (hot glue) then how wide should the rings be? thanks again, oh and do you think you could also add some pictures to go with the instruction?
Aztof in reply to kenninggdAug 5, 2009. 1:32 PM
sorry, but I tried blowing air on the glue, and could not achieve a pockmarked effect, and suggestions, and how did you do it? Thanks
lordvoldemort in reply to kenninggdAug 2, 2009. 3:31 AM

Mine took about 3 hours to make, still gettin the hang of things!
TechnoDrop says: Jan 23, 2012. 6:38 PM
Finally finished making my first wand! Though I did it a bit differently, because I don't have a glue gun OR double adhevise tape, OR spray paint. I didn't have most things actually =/

But hey! A little fantasy and an odd use of tiolet paper and I got it done anyways.

I just need to find out how I can get rid of those nasty edges from where the paper (the rolling part) overlaps i mean. . .it's gonna take an awful lot of paint coatings. Is there a faster way?
kiwi16877 in reply to TechnoDropApr 25, 2012. 7:00 PM
Hahaha me too! the first one i made i only had 3d paint and paper...... didnt go so well......
eknathvyas2 in reply to TechnoDropJan 25, 2012. 4:08 AM
what is a real wand of the harry potter
KaptinScarlet (author) in reply to TechnoDropJan 24, 2012. 1:39 AM
Well done. As far as those edges are concerned, if you use more white glus at the beginning of making the wand (or before you paint it) the paper softens and the edges are very much less pronounced and then when you decorate the surface the rest are covered up. you can also cover the surface in tissue coated in glue, this has the extra effect of making the surface lok like bark.

This is my new favourite activity! I have been making them since the premiere and I made a really nice Hermione wand and also went all geek and dressed like her for the midnight showing, but anyway, I LOVE these <3 I have made almost everyone's wand now and try to make at least one a week. My friends and I love to make them for each other as gifts and they turn out lovely in the end. Thank you so much for this!
LexiLovesPie says: Jan 21, 2012. 5:18 PM
if you want a "Lumous" tip in the dark you can add a bit of glow in the dark paint or nail polish to the tip and when you wish to show it off turn out the lights and hold your hand over the glowing tip then say Lumous and reveal the glowing tip! Then to turn it out say Nox and cover it again with your hand............ little kids won't notice and will be amazed at you magic ability!!!
Ojsmudge says: Dec 3, 2011. 1:03 PM
could you stick a ping pong ball at the bottom of the handle end. Fill the ping pong ball with something instead off having to build up glue or use paper. so you get a perfect round shape

This is so awesome how would you make a Luna Lovegood wand ?
athomas28 in reply to mguzzoOct 28, 2011. 3:05 PM
I often use the wikia for harry potter. They have pics of everyone's wand.
Here's Lovegood's

She actually has 2, since she got a new one in the 7th book.
Here's the second

hey how could i make a white irovy wand kinda like madma la stranges curved wand
LMBook in reply to tinker234Sep 3, 2011. 2:57 PM
I would suggest, if you're using white paper for the wand, that you should skip to step 10. However, rather than using black, I would use (preferably) beige paint or a very light gray. For the curvature, what I did was cut half of the diameter of the wand where I wanted it to curve before I painted it. I then used the hot glue to fill the space. That may not make sense so I'll include a picture for you where I point out where to put the hot glue.

I started making these back in September of 2009 and have really worked hard to perfect my technique.  It all started because I wanted to make wand and boxes for my daughter's Harry Potter themed 11th birthday party.

Here are some flickr photos of some of the wands that I've made.  (And if you go prowling about the rest of my flickr account, you can see pictures of the party--including the 3-D Sorting Hat cake that I made!)

(white with silver scrollwork and bead) this is a picture of just the end of the wand

Sorry for a reply on such an old post, but I had to let you know how amazing your wands look. I love your idea of a hot glue 'wash' to get it textured. And using the gun on the low setting is a good tip. I've made a dozen or so wands and have had trouble with fine detail because I was using the hot setting.
hattohaw in reply to Fun2HoldAug 21, 2011. 1:31 PM
no need to apologize!! I love that this is still be read more than a year later :)

I'm also super glad that it is helpful!
htonks in reply to hattohawAug 9, 2011. 9:39 PM
HOW on earth did you get soo accurate with the glue gun without drips and strings?
roneisaqt in reply to htonksSep 30, 2011. 11:52 PM
I'm doing this project with my brother and noticed the same problem. One thing I found really helpful was using a embossing heat tool/ hot air gun after each section I do. It makes all the strings either melt onto the paper or it makes small strings shrivel back into the hot glue/ melts it off.

As far as drips I make sure to rotate. I also make sure to always have a small fan on so when I'm done, I can cool it down faster. Hope this helps. :)
hattohaw in reply to htonksAug 10, 2011. 8:45 PM
Practice. Lots and lots of practice! And the detailing worked best for me with a low temp glue gun. The extra hot glue is too runny!
