How to make an awsome fuse with easily attainable products that doesnt leave a trace and lights easily.

Step 1: Get your materials

To make this fuse all you need is ...
Yarn (as long as you want your fuse to be)
a rocket engine (technicly optional but is somewhat important)
rubbing alcohol ( also technicly not required)
clear nail polish ( works pretty well)or
colored nail polish( works very well)

I tried making some fuse with twine soaked in acetone. I accidentally left the lid off the bottle of acetone, and the vapour caught and turned it into a pulse jet. This improvised jet then lit some other things on fire. I did manage to put the blaze out with a fire extinguisher, but it really made me think about how dangerous this sort of thing is. By the way, the fuse didn't work at all. The flame traveled the whole length of it in a fraction of a second.

you could use a flammable oil such as tea tree or eucalyptus oil, or Brasso or Silvo can be used, as long it is not choked or swallowed.

I am thinking of using thinning nail polish with the flammable liquid and soak the string in it and let it dry

Acetone is as flammable! since u said it turned into a pulse jet, I'm goint to try it!

might not wanna break it into powder with the hammer... it could very possibly explode if you hit it too hard

It would only happen if a spark appeared in the hammering process.
xiaosijun in reply to shaneomacmcgeeJun 26, 2010. 2:21 AM
is this blackpowder or match head?
littlemog92 in reply to shaneomacmcgeeJul 18, 2009. 3:11 AM
heh When i made black powder i put it in a coffee grinder...But i grinded all ingridients seperate .....SO DONT THINK ITS SAFE TO PUT UNSTABLE EXPLOSIVE COMPOSITIONS IN A COFFEE GRINDER I DONT RECOMEND IT.
mspark400 (author) in reply to shaneomacmcgeeMay 20, 2009. 1:40 PM
agreed, albeit unlikely. the method i use is a light tapping, far from a full swing. This technique is intended to avoid this danger. admittedly not the ideal way but the force required to spontaneously detonate is is much more than I am providing with the hammer. Cheers, Mspark400

will flash powder work?
ToddisI in reply to cclark13Aug 9, 2010. 11:39 AM
It will be flash cord if you used that stuff!!!!!
BOOM5601 in reply to cclark13Jul 5, 2009. 3:51 PM
probably, but it'd burn quite fast.
xiaosijun says: Jun 26, 2010. 2:28 AM
please email me if you succeed. xiaosijun@gmail.com. i am quite interested in your invention
xiaosijun says: Jun 26, 2010. 2:27 AM
well. i think that is not a fuse but a more flamable string. fuse has to be able to burn without oxygen. although you add some kind of powder to you "fuse", and the powder may generate some extra oxygen, i recommend you put the string in sand to test if it still burns well.
dungeon runner says: Feb 19, 2010. 10:55 PM
Nice one! You could also clip off the heads of matches, crush them, then dissolving them with water and soaking a length of string in it. I haven't yet tried, though.
atokad33 says: Apr 20, 2009. 4:13 PM
use white lightning wax lubricant for bikes it doesn't dry as fast and it burns really well soak some cotton or hemp string in it and light it up!!!
Malaachi says: Feb 20, 2008. 1:41 AM
The best way i have found to make a some what reliable fuse is as follows: Grant's stump remover/ potassium nitrate containing substance. Dissolve in water till saturation, soak napkin, let dry and cut off a small rectangular piece, it works great!
DrCoolSanta in reply to MalaachiSep 2, 2008. 3:27 AM
adding sugar with saltpeter should work better. Saltpeter as such will not be so good.
PKTraceur in reply to DrCoolSantaJan 4, 2009. 7:53 AM
Salpetre, or Saltpeter, or Potassium Nitrate. Same things...
ac1D in reply to PKTraceurApr 19, 2009. 7:50 AM
If you can get me any of the 3 above, im paying you a big extra. in canada.
DrCoolSanta in reply to PKTraceurJan 25, 2009. 2:48 AM
Well I know that. I said put suger in with it. Wierd people trying to show off.
Malaachi in reply to DrCoolSantaSep 18, 2008. 2:34 PM
Adding sugar does nothing extra! Just makes it smoke more...
PKTraceur in reply to MalaachiJan 25, 2009. 8:01 AM
Actually, it makes it more ineffecient...
Vulcanator in reply to PKTraceurApr 1, 2009. 6:12 AM
Actually, it decreases the burn rate, so the fuse burns longer, increasing the time before your explosives go off
PKTraceur in reply to VulcanatorApr 1, 2009. 1:54 PM
Exactly. Why wouldnt you want ineffeciencies in your fuse? It gives you more time to run! -PKT
DrCoolSanta in reply to MalaachiSep 19, 2008. 6:52 AM
It does, along with creating smoke, sugar burns better than most natural fibers. The smoke mixture one sustains better.

yah well not all ppl can get those items can they... great job dude....
Malaachi in reply to ladiesman247Sep 18, 2008. 2:35 PM
If you live in the USA you can.
ColbyCirca89 in reply to MalaachiNov 12, 2008. 1:30 PM
Yes, the USA is good for being able to get pyro chemicals. This may be a bad thing, but I think it is quite nice.
Gamer917 says: Feb 20, 2009. 7:32 PM
just soak string in purell hand sanitizer and lite it
mspark400 (author) in reply to Gamer917Feb 20, 2009. 9:14 PM
the problem is that as soon as the alcohol evaporates, the string will just be slightly wet and certainly burn no better than just string alone. cheers, mspark400
Gamer917 in reply to mspark400Feb 21, 2009. 2:37 PM
dip it in purell and immediately lite it

Seriously people, there is a Macro setting on your camera. It allows you to take up-close pictures without them being blurry. The most common symbol for this Macro button is a flower, more specifically a tulip. Other than that, this is a good Instructable.
mspark400 (author) in reply to ColbyCirca89Nov 12, 2008. 8:09 PM
I am quite familiar with the macro setting and i am a semi-pro photographer now. These pictures were taken long ago, before i learned to consider these things. Perhaps in the future i will redo this with my dslr and make it better. cheers, mspark400
whathisname says: Sep 9, 2008. 10:30 PM
i do all kinds of pyro stuff and a reliable fuse is hard to make on limited materials so i usualy just use ordanary gold sparklers, they are reliable, burn in low oxygen, are wind resistent and give you enough time to run the f**k away.
ColbyCirca89 in reply to whathisnameNov 12, 2008. 1:31 PM
Yes, time to run is a good thing.
Malaachi says: Jan 1, 2008. 8:04 PM
Common sense, is that why you lit it next to some rubbing alcohol. Other wise good work but um shouldn't it 100% cotton yarn because synthentic just melts I can't get it burn.
DrCoolSanta in reply to MalaachiSep 19, 2008. 6:57 AM
Last I remember, all the synthetic threads that I have burn better than cotton.
jonrb in reply to MalaachiFeb 17, 2008. 4:31 AM
I would suggest putting a thin layer of glue so it help burn...
mspark400 (author) in reply to MalaachiJan 8, 2008. 6:04 PM
I know that is what it looks like but I'm no hypocrite. Despite appearances none of those containers have what they say, I'm pretty sure there was mostly water (don't ask me why) I do appreciate your concern for safety though so thanks for checking and yeah i didn't mention but you are right it should be all cotton yarn:)
