I got a sweet deal on some speakers and an amp for the downstairs treadmill/bike room. But I couldn't blow that deal by spending $50 on some speaker stands.

You will need:
-16x 1-1/4" screws
-1 x 1" x 8" x 2' wood
-1 x 1" x 6" x 2' wood
-Spray paint

Good job. Also, you could cut the 2 vertical board edges at a 45 and joint them (like a frame) to created a closed V and that would conceal the wires. Then drill a hole for the wires in the back of the top plate.
