Picture of Modified Rubik's Cube
In this tutorial I'm going to show you how to make a Rubik's Cube, which changes the shape when you scramble it.

The cuboid is easy to make, because you don't have to extend any pieces.

Check out step 5 to see, how to solve it. Basically it solves like the 3x3x3, so if you know how to solve that one, you should have no problems. A big advantage compared e.g. to the Fisher Cube is, that there is no parity.
Also you can easily shove it into your pocket because it is a lot thinner than the original cube.

Step 1: What you need

Picture of What you need
This is what you need:

  • A black Rubik's Cube (Best is a DIY Cube, because you can easily assemble and disassemble it. Also it comes with a set of stickers, which you can later use). You can of course use an assembled cube, but you will have to get rid of the stickers, before you start.
  • self-hardening synthetic clay (I used “Apoxie® Sculpt”)
  • Tiles or stickers (e.g. from cubesmith.com). Just get the regular 3x3x3 sized ones. Tiles are better, because they can compensate small irregularities.
  • a Dremel (Felt Polishing Wheel, SpeedClic Plastic Cutting Wheel)  if you don't have a Dremel, just use a regular saw
  • sandpaper (400, 800, 1000)
  • a black permanent marker
  • a box cutter

That isn't a cuboid, it's a shape mod of a 3x3. It may look like a cuboid with only a 2x3 grid of stickers, but you have to include the corner to the left of the blue, orange, green, or orange face. if it moves like a 3x3 but doesn't shape-shift (like a REAL cuboid, e.g. 2x2x4), or has a sum of the grid X + grid Y + grid Z not evenly divisible by at least one of the grids (if the sum of three grids/grid x, the sum of three grids/grid y, and the sum of three grids/grid z equal each other, you have a cubic puzzle, and you can now use that for calculating the volume using two numbers and you can calculate the third. You're welcome.

If you know how to solve a normal 3x3, is it fairly easy/same solving method to solve this one?

Is that same cube in other games or is it the same one in the same game I play!

I know that cube is in the game Adrenaline!!!
BrittLiv (author)  HeyJD5 years ago

Do you mean the companion cube? It is part of the game portal.

What is a companion cube? I've heard of it a lot but I don't know what it is. :(
HeyJD scistone4 years ago
A companion cube is a cube you find on a level of portal. You have to throw it out straight after the level. So many people like the cube that it became a meme.

OK, I HAVE NO IDEA WHAT YOU ARE TALKING ABOUT. ALL I SEE IS "a companion cube is a cube you find on BLAH BLAH BLAH. You have to BLAH BLAH BLAH. So many people like the cube that it BLAH BLAH. Can you please tell me what game this is and what is a portal and what is a meme and how do you throw it and what kind of level are you talking about!?!? Thanks :)
Are you serious?
The Companion Cube is a "character" you meet in the game Portal. Long story short you're a test subject, testing the Aperture Science Portal Gun, that makes portals, by solving some simple puzzles. To help solve your puzzles you're given a companion cube for one level, you're supposed to get attached to said companion cube because (SPOILER: kinda) you're later supposed to destroy it. It's a meme (Just google it) and is ridiculously popular. It's also supposed to be your one and only friend
Ohhhhhhh Yeeeeaaaa. I have heard of people talking about portal. Thanks

Ah, yes. I remember that cube in portal... but that same cube is Adrenaline too.

Thanks a lot, it's not that easy to write an Instructable in a foreign language, so I really appreciate it if somebody corrects me (or corrects the one that corrected me ,-))

The cube is a lie! It's not possible to make something that amazing! :0
Cube. Cake. Same thing, really.
the cake is NOT a lie!
Well, it is and isn't :P The player gets to the cake, but the actual character never does...

i will miss mine since i killed it in Portal :´(
Same! D:

you killed a DIY for this!!!!
BrittLiv (author)  Bob13254 years ago
You can use a normal cube, but it's going to be harder to make and the result will not be as good.
why is that?
Sorunome4 years ago
cool!! but you can buy them...
Where? I've seen a whole lot of types of Rubik's Cubes for sale but never one like this. I would like to buy one pre-assembled so a link would be great. And even if you can actually buy one this is an awesome Instructable! Apparently enough people agree that it is one of the BEST Instructables for 2010 Great Job BrittLiv!

Hi, thanks a lot, just search for windmill cube. Like the name says it's a cube, I prefer the cuboid though, because it is thinner and you can easily shove it into your pocket.
the one of cubikon has the size of a normal rubik's cube...
BrittLiv (author)  Sorunome4 years ago
Hi, I know, I've got it (I'm German, too), I still prefer the thinner one though.
