Step 1: The core

Picture of the core
to start the sword you need a piece of 2" PVC pipe or graphite. the length of the sword cannot exceed 48 inches. cut it a few inches short so you can leave room for the pommel and tip padding. note: the longer you make it the heaver this is going to be so remember that these battles have lasted for at the most a half an hour.

Step 2:

after you've got the right size pipe you take the pool noodle and cut a peace off a little longer than the blade will be. then cut a piece about 4-6 inches long depending on how big your hands are.
after that wrap the entire thing in packing or duct tape either one works excellently. and remember that the tips can be no smaller than a human eye socket and you must put at least two layers of foam on the tip or it wont be legal for any games. whether its a layer of camp pad and another of fun noodle or just some pool noodle in two layers you really don't want to not put enough on and have the core hurt somebody.

Step 3:

Once its well taped you have a choice. 1 make a cloth cover for the sword. 2 cover it in more duct tape and say its done. both work so after your done don a tunic and slay your friends.

Hey, this is a great instructable and is very informative. Just one thing is missing... pictures! It really helps a lot when trying to follow directions so you should consider taking some photographs. Once you do that and leave me a message when you have so that we can publish your work. Thanks! Thanks for the cool instructable and we hope to publish this soon!
Helpful thanks (:

Thanks for this instructable :)
PVC is nice, but in the middle of fierce combat it does have a tendency to break off in sharp points. A little bit more expensive, but MUCH lighter, and not to mention, much safer alternative is Kite tubing! I'm part of the NERO group of Middle Tennessee, and we have a craftsmen who makes ours. Very excellent work, and only the best of materials. Catch ya'll on the field!

you can also use fiberglass from old golf clubs just cut the head off with an angle grinder
A few comments, sir.... I've been doing these games for a long while and I'm something of an expert at making the weapons involved.... First off: Use a piece of foam to cover the tip!!!! This can be two layers of camp-pad, a piece of noodle taped down, etc, just as long as it covers the tip. Second, if the tip is anything smaller than a half inch or is hollow, use some tape to cover it so it doesn't blow out through the camp pad. I'd make an instructable about this but I don't have firefox. Seriously, I'll write an instructable if I can email it to someone willing to post it.
il hapily post it send it to me if u want feralpygmy@yahoo.com.au

2 inch, or 1/2 inch PVC?  Most of the boffers I've used had a core of 1/2 or 3/4 inch PVC, close to 3/4 or 1 inch outside diameter.
