Introduction: Making Guacamole

Guacamole is a hit at block parties and work events. It's delicious and easy to make!

Step 1: Gather Ingredients and Tools

The secret to great guacamole is fresh ingredients. The avocados should be ripe. Choose avocados that are slightly soft to the touch; they should squish a little when you press them with your finger. Unripe avocados are very hard. Over-ripe avocados are mushy. Fresh lime and onion are also important. The best salt to use is sea salt in a salt mill.

1. Avocados (2)

2. Limes (2) - You will use one and a half.

3. Onions (1) - You will use less than half.

4. Salt - to taste

You will also need:

1. A sharp knife for cutting the avocados, onion, and limes

2. A spoon and a fork

3. A medium-sized bowl

4. A citrus squeezer (optional)

Step 2: Cut the Avocado in Half.

Slide the knife around the seed. Then wedge the knife into the seed to pull it out.

Step 3: Scoop the Avocado Into the Bowl.

Use a spoon to scoop the avocado out of the rind and into the bowl.

Step 4: Chop the Onion

First, slice the onion. You will need less than half the onion for this recipe. Two half-inch thick slices should be enough. Chop the slices into pieces.

Step 5: Add the Onion to the Bowl

Step 6: Slice the Lime.

Slice the limes in half. The lime halves can be squeezed by hand or with a citrus squeezer.

Step 7: Add the Lime Juice

Either by hand or with a citrus sqeezer, add the juice of three lime halves.

Step 8: Add the Salt

Grind sea salt into the mix. You can experiment with how much salt to add. Start with just a little. You can always add more.

Step 9: Mash Up the Ingredients

Use a fork to mash up the ingredients into guacamole.

Step 10: Enjoy Your Guacamole!

It is delicious in tacos or on chips. Should be served within an hour of making.

I use milk when I want it plain, it gives it a cream taste. I use lime when I add red tomatoes, coriander and chile. Never mix milk and lime juice!

Nice work. I like to use red onions, but now I cannot remember why. How do those white (yellow?) onions work for you? Do you add any spices for heat?

I often use red onions as they're a bit sweeter. The white onions have an earthier taste. I like to keep it simple and prefer not to make it spicy, but I imagine you could add some jalepenos if you wanted.
