1) Don't bother putting the cake in the fridge or freezer. Instead, use boiling hot water for your metal spatula / spreader. It's pliable like this too. You save 1-2 hours.
2) Smooth the white parts first before working on the darker parts. This way, you avoid spreading smudges onto the white. Also, if you cut small parts of the white from where it's thickest, you can use them to hide any smudges.
3) I used 8 inch pans and made five cakes to make a perfect square. To save time, I baked the cakes over a few nights and put them in the freezer until I was ready to decorate them. The cake is a bread product, so it doesn't take long to thaw.
4) I wrote "The cake is a lie" on either side of the cake board, as Wikipedia explained the game. My son loved this touch because it's an inside joke for the gamers.
but this is an amazing cake! :D
There are the hearts in the middle of each side plus the lines connecting the hearts to the middle boxes of the sides. If that made any sense...
Basically, if you are having a tough time visually, just look up what a companion cube looks like, that may be better than me trying to explain it. Haha.
Good luck!
But, what I did not include with this cake (the buyer did not want it this way) I actually carve out pieces to give it dimention. But, I would love to see how you do it with fondant. =]
And when assembling the cake, it will be a bit off. Putting together cake like that is tough, and being perfect is even more so.
But you did a great job, it came out perfectly!
