Step 1Open Your Mouse

Open Your Mouse
Locate the screws on the bottom of your mouse and unscrew them. This will probably take a jewelers screwdriver, since they are pretty small screws. Pull up on the back of the mouse, and pull back. It is not necessary to force. There are tabs in this stock Dell one, that force you to pull back rather than immediately out.

Thanks! This saved me time, money and headaches. Dropped the mouse and the left click button wasn't responding. When I took it apart to see if it was fixable, the springs fell out and I couldn't figure out how to get them back in. The freewheel function was too weird for me so I put both back but I could not have done it without these pics. The click button still isn't working great but at least it's useable.

I had no hope of saving a mouse I attempted to 'clean up' after unscrewing the casing and watching the springs come off after turning it over. This instructable, and the fantastic picture of where those springs go, saved me some cash in not having to replace the mouse. I was seriously going to pitch the whole mess but waited until I had a chance to search the web. I couldn't believe I found this. GREAT INSTRUCTABLE!!

Whoa, it feels weird without the click. It's good for silent browsing at night though xD I'll keep it with the mod.

Awesome! Thank you so much. This is so much nicer. Why did they even design it to click in the first place?

If you're gaming, and one scrolling click means switching the weapon once. Two scroll clicks means switching two weapons further. And so on...

Two reasons, I think. One: really old mice probably had very low resolution optical encoders. Two: The snap prevents the mouse from stopping in between degrees in the encoder shaft (which still happens sometimes).

Ok, so I had disassembled my logitech wheel mouse to clean it, only to find that I was left with two springs and didn't remember how to put them back.

Even though this article was about *removing* that spring, this article did the opposite for me and showed me how to *add* both springs again.

Thank you!

then you obviously dont need this, and didnt need to wast your prescious time commenting. to the author, great ible. if my mouse has the same setup on the inside, im dont this. more precise stuff while zooming or using modeling programs, and it just plain feels better.

I did this exact same thing when I was modding my mouse to make it all completely black and white. I was like "hmmm, I wonder what happens if i remove this spring" and then I was like "OMFG, I LOVE HAPPY ACCIDENTS."

Then i wrote a slideshow about it and wrote it off as if i meant to do it on purpose. Yus.

My mouse scroll wheel doesn't click at all. That's kind of weird, I wonder why...
Nov 18, 2009. 7:42 PMtest34 says:
...but instead of removing that second spring, I bent it down a little so the wheel now barely clicks when I scroll yet still offer a little resistance so that it doesnt free-spins

thanks for this howto, my wheel is now silent (unless I click)

I cant find any screws on my mouse : ( idk where they are. it is wireless, and i checked under the battery and stuff. next im going under the stickers, but i didnt feel anything. could the mouse just snap apart?
Jun 21, 2009. 11:04 AMphreec says:
this is great!! but i have a question...is it correctible/reversible? i LOVE these kinds of ibles, but i am always nervous that i'm going to f up something i can't afford to replace, LOL!! :))

the roughness acts as a stop and helps incontrolling the Mouse !! making it too smooth only makes it more slippery to use !!

I did something like that a few years ago to my logitech mouse... I first removed entirely that spring, as shown here, but then realized that I was used to that "clicking". The reason is that in some applications works as page-up & page-down per wheel click, and generally there are a lot of functions "per wheel click" (in games, in picture viewing applications etc), and I couldn’t used those functions effectively without that spring. So I decided to put it back, but first I used a pair of small pliers to bend it. I bend it down exactly at the point where it meets the turning wheel, so that the clicks get a lot softer. Now the clicking noise and the annoying “force” on my finger is gone, but I can still feel the faint clicks on my fingers when it is required. You may need to experiment a bit to find how much you should bent it, in order to get the “clicks” as soft as you need.
Nov 7, 2008. 12:16 AMwurlybird9 says:
a reduced click is definitely a good idea. Sometimes stepping is useful, plus some small resistance to accidental scroll. I have a Compaq mouse and the spring appears to be enclosed. There's a metal disc with a small notch, which causes the click....and resistance. Not sure of a quick and easy way to reduce or disable this without some permanent mangling.
Oct 11, 2008. 11:15 PMgod_gave_knex_to_you says:
odd. all i did was open my mouse, something popped out, and it doesnt click anymore, but i can still feel the click
