Step 20.... the outcome.

.... the outcome.
Taking a hot air balloon ride tomorrow morning.... so chances are she'll either say yes, or throw me from the basket.

I'll let you know afterward... wish me luck!!

EDIT:

She said yes!!
(Well actually she kind of cried and nodded.... but the effect was the same).

Yay!

This is really impressive. The finished product is absolutely stunning. Actually, stunning doesn't cut it. I honestly can't think of a word suitable enough to express how beautiful I think this ring is. Your wife to be is one lucky girl.!! Congratulations on everything!!

wtf man?? dont tell me you built her a log cabbin too from the trees that you grew yourself then cut down and processed, and do you do your own water filtration as well?? im just pulling your leg, but you will make regular joes look really bad, just read the comment above mine, poor BF is in trouble already and he will have no idea why!! but im all for hands on things myself, so congrats on the engagement and very cool instructable, the only way to learn how things work and are made is to do them yourself, not counting skydiving or swimming cuz u need lessons for that otherwise.............

I think this is where Old Spice got the idea for their commercials!

"Ladies, did your man propose to you in a hot air balloon ride with the diamond ring he made with his own hands?!?!"

BTW great 'ible, I'm tempted to try this...

So romantic - I'd be especially enamored to know my beau went through all of this.

Another option (possibly cheaper) for the casting process is to make friends with someone who works in a dental laboratory. We still make most of our crowns with the lost wax method and the casting process is exactly the same as for jewelry. Also, we keep white gold in stock.

Also, there are "findings" suppliers like Rio Grande Jewelry Supply and RoseCo.  They have pre-cast ring blanks for very reasonable prices.  You just set the stones and give it a final polish.

where's the picture of her wearing the ring? that would complete this!

Congrats! I spent 2 weeks carving a ring out of a piece of pearl shell (harder than it seems) only to find it was a little too tight for her finger after i gave it to her... Anyway, while I was reshaping it, it broke in half and two of the diamonds that I had set into it "flung" off somewhere never to be seen again.

Its good to see at least someone has some luck when it comes to this stuff... Well done!

this is so sweet! ive done a similar thing except i used aluminum and i did lost foam casting P.S. dont tell my gff this but aluminum is a pain to work with when its that small so i just used epoxy to set the stone

We got three instructables in one! One for the ring, another how to impress the beloved one, and between the lines to respect other persons consent not giving anything for granted. Thats the power of love in action. Best wishes for you!

dude, thats absolutely stellar. i would never have the patience to carve wax. im a machinist though, so i'd make a ring on my lathe.... i'm not for precious metals.... tungsten anyone?

wow.. you took her on a HOT AIR BALOON ride and proposed with a ring that YOU MADE?! I'm showing my boyfriend this instructable. Congratuations!

Just don't freak out when he doesn't make you a ring. Even this guy didn't make the ring himself. He just carved the wax and left the rest up to pros. Still impressive though.
May 18, 2009. 3:10 PMcorpusvile says:
Haha I won't, he's not the ring making type. I suppose this might inspire him to be a little more romantic in general .
