Introduction: Map Rose Wreath

About: I am excited to be starting my own day care in my home town of Independence Kansas and look forward to opening this fall!

In this instructable you will learn how to make your own map rose wreath. It's a great decoration for any time of year.

Things you will need-

  • A metal wreath frame, (you could also use a foam wreath or even just a cardboard circle)
  • Maps (I used maps from an old atlas book that was out of date which I got at a library sale.)
  • Scissors
  • A hot glue gun
  • Pen or pencil (I used a pencil but a pen might be easier to see)
  • Red ribbon
  • Toy plane (I got one from Wal-Mart and painted it red)

Step 1: Prepare Paper Circle

Start by drawing a circle on your map. It doesn't have to be a perfect circle but you could trace around something like a lid or bowl if you would rather not draw it by hand. I used a pencil the first time I did this project so I would be able to erase if I made a mistake but a pen shows up better in pictures so I used a pen for this tutorial.

Cut the circle out.

After the circle is cut you will start from the outside edge of the circle and cut it to make a spiral to the inside of the circle leaving enough room in the middle for you to glue the rest of the flower later as you see in the picture. You could also draw a spiral on and then cut along it if you wanted too.

Step 2: Make the Flower.

Now starting on the outside again start rolling up the spiral of paper. Once you get to the center it will look similar to the second picture.

Now slowly let the coil of paper unravel to create the flower.

Be sure not to drop the flower at this point or you will have to wind the whole thing all over again! Now you will need to use your hot glue gun to glue the bottom of the paper flower (the coiled part) to the circle in the center of the spiral. Be careful not to burn yourself! You will also want to glue it on the other side the same way just to be sure it doesn't unravel.

Now you have one rose completed! I like to make these in a variety of sizes to give the wreath a more interesting look. I find it's best to move to the next few steps and then come back to this one and make more flowers as I go rather than making all the flowers at once.

Step 3: Add Flowers to Your Wreath Frame.

Now you get to add your flower to your wreath!

When using a wire wreath it's good to make sure that you not only get the glue between the flower and where you are putting it on the wire but to also put it over the back of the wire and onto the back of the flower to make sure the flower is secure.

I like to start by making several large flowers and placing them around the wreath kind of randomly. You can make them larger or smaller simply by varying the size of the circle you make. You can also vary the height to the flowers by varying the width of the spiral you cut.

From there I make other sizes and put them randomly around the wreath and then kind of fill in the gaps with whatever size of flower is needed.

Step 4: Adding the Plane.

Now that you've added all of those flowers you're almost done!

Cut a piece of ribbon a little longer than you want the plane to hang down from the top of the wreath. Tie the ribbon on to the plane. Once the ribbon is attached to the plane cut another piece or ribbon and tie it in a bow around the ribbon where it meets the plane. I suggest adding a dab of hot glue on the back to make sure that the bow stays in place.

Now tie the ribbon to the top and be sure that you like the position of the airplane. Once you like where the airplane hangs add another dab of hot glue to the ribbon where it is tied to the wreath. I also added a bow where the ribbon is tied to the wreath after tying it like I did with the bow on the plane.

All done! I find it's easiest to just use a wreath hanger to display the wreath on your door.

Enjoy!
