Match Friction Igniters

Using just a match, a empty box of matches, and a few other things that can be bought at Wal-Mart,(and Visco fuse, gunpowder and dextrin) you can make an igniter that doesn't need a lighter.This uses a pushing action to start it, but can be modified for a pull to start it.

Step 1 Materials

Materials:
-Aluminum Duct Tape
-1 or 2 Matches (Safety matches, ones that require the striker)
-Empty Match Box
-Super Glue
-Black Powder
-Dextrin
-Visco Fuse
-Scissors
-Alcohol

You might need to substitute things if you don't have what is on my list.

the only prob is im 12 and not old enough to buy fireworks, gunpowder, matches, lighters,ect so homemade recipes are helpful

You could buy bullets and carefully remove the powder, but he put ",(and" which means elsewhere.

Actually, correct me if I'm wrong, but gunpowder in bulets actually contain a form of nitrocellulose, which is not soluble in water, but an acetone.You might be able to use that, but....

Either nitrocellulose, or nitrocullulose and nitroglycerine, along with stabilizers, binders and graphite. There are no commercially loaded black powder cartridges.

Several of the walmarts here in kansas carry both black powder and metal looking stuff normal bullets use (I, too, assume it's some sort of stabilized nitrocellulose, but I could be way off base) , as well as several other compounds intended for muzzle loaders both in pound containers and in carefully measured packets/lumps. They're a little pricier then at your average reloading/gun store or online, but certainly there on the shelf.

really??????? idk but i have a 'island-cabbin' in Canada that my dad,uncle,friends,family, go up 2 every summer and my dad said fireworks are LEGAL so we bring a anus load up every year :-| . Just i know ALL FIREARMS are illeagal.

m-80's are illegal. I wouldn't get them because if you ended up hurting yourself, you couldn't sue anybody, because they are illegal. You'd be stuck in jail (it's hard to hide several missing fingers), and it'd just be bad. That said, I don't know where you live, so I can't tell you how much they are. To find someone that makes them, look for the wierd guy that has missing fingers, freaks out when a firecracker goes off, and has display fireworks year-round. M-80's are bad if you don't know absolutely what you are doing.

the thing that i find odd is that every thing above M-80 like m-88 are not illegal.

Where do you live? In the U.S., (I don't know about other countries) ALL fireworks that have more than 50 milligrams of flash powder are illegal. If you buy your fireworks from a regular fireworks store, you might be wasting your money. If you didn't already know this, you should know that fireworks (similar to those in the picture) are fake, only a regular firecracker in a cardboard shell, with plaster around them, and with plastic caps on the ends. If you don't believe me, go take one apart. That said, I don't know what an m-88 is, I'm just guessing that it's just a little larger than a m-80.

Mine came from skylighter.com, but you could also get it from pyrocreations.com, cannonfuse.com, and a host of other sites. Black match would take fire better, but would not be as rigid.

Two questions on this. First: how reusable is it? Do the matches burn long enough to start the whole thing on fire or is it something that you could use a good dozen times or more before it starts to go? Second:If your going to be using these to light something that already has a fuse (depending it may be useful) how would all of you attatch them? I would think rather than the fuse that's in it you could rig something up with just a paper clip to hold the fuse inside of it. That way you wouldnt have to attatch fuse to fuse...would could still be done...

They are designed to be one-time use, but might be able to be reused once or twice. The fuse kinda burns into the striking surface, so it would be dependant on that.
Attaching fuse to fuse is easy, just put the two parallel, and touching each other, and wind a bunch of masking tape or aluminum duct tape around it.I can't see why not attaching the fuse coming from this to another thing would be so bad/hard. I made this so you could make alot of them at a time, then tie the fuses coming from it to any device you wanted.
Either way, it's good to play around with the idea, and find better ways of doing it.
