Introduction: Maxed Out Maxi Skirt

About: I'm an avid crafter who dabbles in just about every medium possible (can you say ADD?). I love inspiring and getting inspired by fellow crafters, and am on a mission to help revive the lost art of handmade liv…

I can’t help but fall in love with all these long, flowy maxi skirts that keep popping up on my fashion radar! Cool and breezy, with a touch of bohemian chic, they simply rock. The great thing about these pieces is how easy they are to create – with my basic basic sewing knowledge I was able to make one in 15 minutes. Here’s how:

What you will need:
* 2 yards of sheer fabric
* Thread
* Sewing machine and/or needle
* ½ inch width elastic (at least 1 yard)
* Scissors
* Wire (optional)

Step 1: Cutting Out Your Fabric

Take the following measurements: around your waist where you would want to wear your skirt; around your hips; the length from your waist to the floor. Write these numbers down somewhere to keep track of them!

Begin by cutting out a piece of fabric with a width that is 2 ½-3 times amount of the measurement around your hips, by the length from your waist to the floor plus 3 inches.

Step 2: Sewing Your Top Hem

At the top of your fabric, fold over 2 inches and pin into place to create a hem for your elastic to go through. Sew along your pinned line with either a machine or by hand.

Step 3: Adding Your Elastic Waist Band

Taking a piece of wire, thread it through your hem and use it to pull through a piece of elastic, cut to the length of your waist measurement plus 1 inch.

Step 4: Connecting Your Elastic

With both ends exposed, sew your elastic together securely. I went over it several times with my machine.

Step 5: Connecting the Sides of Your Skirt

Pin the sides of your skirt together, inside out. Sew along this pinned section to close your skirt. (You can also fold over the bottom section of your skirt to create a hem – I used pinking shears which keeps fabric from fraying, so I didn’t do this step).

Step 6: Enclosing Your Elastic

To sew your fabric shut around the elastic, fold one side of the opening of your fabric into a ¼” hem and place the other opening inside. Hand sew these together.

And that's it! A beautiful maxi skirt for under $15!
