Introduction: Mejoras a Mi KISS Lathe (my KISS Lathe Upgrades)

About: I am leaving Instructables, soon. I am very upset with the turnaround that has the page to post the manufacture of a dildo. Me llamo Osvaldo Julio Schiavoni I speak Spanish, not English. I use automatic tran…

Seen and considering my KISS lathe has been successful, it is worth taking the time to make it corrections and improvements. Some necessary, some desirable, others "by the way".

Step 1: Proteccin Contra Viruta (chip Protection)

The engine is very robust and has held up well so far the entry of sawdust and chips, but do not overdo it. It might be that in the midst of a work , a particle of wood makes the engine shutdown.

I thought to cover the openings in the lids with mesh, but it was very likely that this will obstruct relatively quickly, causing engine overheating due to lack of cooling. So I just took a piece of tin from an used spray, I made two holes in its side and secure it with the nuts that hold the covers in place.

Step 2: Cambiar La Correa Del Variador (changing Drive Belt)

The one I used originally, after failing my attempts to make myself a belt, was –as I explained at the time– of an appliance purchased. It worked well, but it was flat, which limits the variation range of speed. To understand why that was, imagine that the belt is the width of the cones: in this case the variation would be zero. After some research and be lucky to find a knowledgeable person on the subject, I bought a few pieces of nitrile band of 7 mm circular section, especially suitable for what I needed. I cut a piece of suitable length, ends on a fairly sharp angle, in order to increase the bonding surface. Heat a piece of metal in the flame of gas, I assured it vertical clamp and a rubber band to have both hands free, and supporting the ends of the piece of nitrile, waited two or three seconds until melted. Then, quickly joined and waited a while for it to cool.

Step 3: Adaptar La Corredera (adjust the Slider)

By changing the belt, I had to adapt the slider to the new belt, which is narrower

Step 4: Reducir La Velocidad (slowing)

Although the speed controller works well, the minimum speed was still a little high. After some hesitation, I decided it would be simpler and more effective to make larger the upper cone. Since I had not a piece of wood large enough, stacked three rounds of wood of medium thickness. The result is very satisfactory. The only condition that must comply the new cone is to keep the angle of the generatrix, ie the tilt.

Step 5: Adaptar La Corredera Bis (adjust the Slider Bis)

Changing one of the cones, the belt out of the slide, so I had to adapt by opening the arms of the wheels support.

Step 6: Contrapunta (tailstock)

For elongated turning, tailstock is needed. I made a tower with a transversely elongated top opening, to allow me to adjust its position easily. Moves longitudinally on chassis of the lathe, and secured in the desired place by two tabs with individual screws tightened.

The tailstock itself was mounted on an iron pipe of 4.2 cm in diameter, so I can replace it by the drill in case need to make a hole. The tube is about 10 cm long with a 7/16 nut at each end, inside of which passes a threaded rod with a pointed cone at one end and a handle on the other. I added a nut to lock it into the desired position. This tube is secured by a cradle that prevents it from deviating laterally or vertically, provided with a clamp rod 1/2 x 1/8 with screw and nut.

The normal position of the tailstock is aligned with the center of the spindle or chuck.

Step 7: Tensores De La Correa (belt Tensioners)

I had planned a tensioning system based on only one side lift the spindle. This works well for small adjustments, but after a certain margin begins to affect the alignment of the belt on the slide as it moves outward for one side and inward for the other. So I decided to replace the screws that hold the spindle for two longer. Thus, supplementing with pieces of iron the spindle base, I can significantly enhance the regulation of belt tension.

Step 8: Reforzar El Mandril (reinforcing the Chuck)

My chuck is not a chuck, forgive the paradox. It's just a short screw, which assure a cylindrical wooden block that contains within it an iron nut. I glue the piece to the block of wood to turning, and once finished the work I separate it with the cutting tool. What I did this time was to replace the screw with a more thick, 7/16. Obviously, I had to modify the set of wooden blocks by changing the inner nut.

Step 9: Llave Inversora (reversing Switch)

For finishing of the piece you should give the final sanding rotating in the opposite direction. Otherwise the surface of the piece does not fit, since the ends of the wood fibers are "combed" toward the direction of sanding. For that I took the engine has (I think all AC motors have) the ability to rotate in one direction or another according to connection of the green and red wires, two of each color, that feed it.

A reversing switch is quite expensive and bulkier than I need. So I bought a double module of combination switches, which are used to control the lights in a hallway, turning on from and end and off from the other. I connected the keys as shown in the diagram.

Step 10: Un Mejor Apoyaherramienta (better Tool Rest)

The new tool rest is longer, it can rotate horizontally 360 degrees and is height adjustable. As I started turning pieces not very thick, rotating 90 degrees I can switch between turning outside or inside it without moving the arbor, since the vertical axis of rotation of the tool rest is not aligned with the support line of the cutting tool .
