You're covering the egg in soot (not ash).
It looks shiny because there's a layer of air trapped around it. This is an effect (with soot) that I haven't seen before, thanks.

more to the point, it's soot which is mixed in with vapourised candle wax. the wax, being an oil doesn't let the water onto the egg, and creates that nice optical illusion, at least that's my theory.
Jun 9, 2007. 10:58 AMlemonie says:
I'd go with that. L

Sep 5, 2007. 6:55 PMARVash says:
Aaactually It uses surface tension, the soot is a collection of tiny tiny particles, and the particles are so fine that the water can't fit between it. (_____) |......|.....| | - soot particle ..... egg (_____) water :P

So the hydrophibic oils from burning the wax don't have anything to do with this?
Oct 17, 2011. 3:09 PMdragonsniper says:
nope, considering he also did it with a lighter

Seems like I saw this written up somewhere when I was a kid with an extra twist. Use a hard boiled egg. Float it on salt water, then very slowly pour fresh water down the side of the bowl. If you manage not to mix the fresh and the salt water, the silver egg will appear to suspend magically.
Jul 8, 2007. 11:22 PMmegziewoodles says:
That egg probably shouldn't be floating like that. Either it's rotten, there's salt in the water or it's hard/softboiled. But that is a nifty trick.

This just makes me angry. >:(
Jun 2, 2007. 12:25 PMxenobiologista says:
If you want to try this with kids, have them blacken the bowl of a metal spoon instead (also safer cos it keeps your fingers away from the flame). Then tell them that the coating will "instantly" wash off and the spoon will become silver again under water.
Jun 2, 2007. 5:37 PMjeffcapeshop says:
thus confusing them for the rest of their lives.
Jun 2, 2007. 11:40 AMninepound says:
I'm assuming it only keeps its 'metallic' properties when it's in water?
Jun 2, 2007. 2:06 PMTheCheese9921 says:
Thats what it looks like : (, I was so excited it would be metallic all the time, then it would be really cool with egg light
