Step 1: What You Need

1. Coffee Can (large size)
2. PC Fan - I used a 60mm
3. 9 Volt Battery and clip
4. Hose. I used a section of pool hose
5. Dry Ice and water

Step 2: Prepare the Fan Blower

Lay out the computer fan on the top of the coffee can and draw a mark around it. Cut the top just inside the mark. Using hot glue or other epoxy, glue the fan to the top with the air flow facing inside the can. Add the 9-volt battery clip to the fan.

Step 3: Add the Hose

Make a mark at the top of the can using the hose as a guide. Cut out the hole in the can using whatever tools work. I used metal shears and then a Dremel to round it out. Squeeze in the hose or use hot glue to secure it. It should be a tight fit.

Step 4: Make some fog!

Break off a chunk of dry-ice. Heat some water in whatever method you prefer. Plug in the 9volt battery to the clip. Add the hot water to the can, drop in the dry-ice and quickly cover the top.

You've now made some mighty fog! I hope you enjoyed this Instructable!

Note: Always use gloves when handling dry-ice. Always use in a well-ventilated area. For those of you concerned about heating water in a microwave, read this www.snopes.com/science/microwave.asp

And if you can't get dry ice use fog fluid but you will need to add a very powerful heater to the project.

You can get dry ice from almost any local store. They get it when they get big shipments. I should know that's where I get my dry ice and most of the time it's free because they don't use it.

Where does one purchase dry ice?

I have never seen it advertised for sale.
I don't think it's generally available here in the UK. I've never been able to find it for sale, but compressed CO2 is so commonly available in so many different sized cartridges and cylinders that I doubt t would be economical unless you were using a LOT.

I purchased a 5lb block at our local Publix which is a popular supermarket chain. YOu can also ask your butcher or other food location that receives frozen foods.
What about in Canada?  As well I would like to point out that they don't sell it to minors, cause you make a fricken huge bomb out of it!
so true. NBC even said kids (teens of course.) in the US are making there own bombs by putting water and dry ice in soda botteles
wher did you grt the pc fan
Probably a computer power supply.
or computer usa.
Where do you live? I have never even heard of Publix.
this really good you could use this for disco smoke if you cant be asked to buy a new and sealed smoke machine.

but it would have to be weaker if it would be for disco stuff
you have a wikipedia page!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
you rock

most grocery stores, or conveinence stores. Usually right inside the door
Hey Kiteman! if you have a Publix by you i know they sell dry ice at mine!
if you know a freight manager at say walmart or a other store that has ice cream you can get it, or you can buy it at walmart or city market you can just ask for dry ice

You could always try fishing stores - The ones that sell bait
try Ingles i just bought a couple pounds there today.......p:
Publix sells it to people over 18. I just have a parent buy it for me.
I get my dry ice at Meijer, about 1.30$ per pound
Kroger or walmart.  If you are 21 or older, just ask for it.
Dairy Queen, any Ice Cream shop. Call around (and no, they don't advertise because they don't sell it to minors.)
One very rarely sees Dry Ice advertised for sale.  I know most Mega Marts have started selling it.  Normally in the area where the regular ice machines are at.
We used to get our dry ice at 31 flavors Ice Cream shop.  Also, I've noticed that the Meijers food store chain has a dry ice cooler right by the regular ice cooler. :)

Immingham, big ammonia plant.

I know in North Carolina you actually have to be a certain age to purchase it. More so you have to go to a place that specializes in dry ice to buy it. Most stores here are not aloud to carry it.

try dryicedirectory.com to see if you can find a shop in your area.

This is a cool quick "things to do with dry ice" project. The amount of smoke just wouldn't last very long. After a few minutes, the boiling water would cool down, and then you will get a trickle of smoke coming out afterwards. Maybe if you could keep the can over the hot side of a peltier or small hot plate or something to keep the water warm. This would help to keep a steady amount of fog created.
The water doesn't have to be boiling... as long as it's pretty warm. Most dry ice machines that I have worked with don't use boiling water... just warm. You could probably work an on-demand water heater like is used for camping pretty easily. That should fix any cooling problems. :)

That coffee can will cause severe injuries if you touch it with the dry ice so try another container. Won't the metal of the can make the effects of dry ice worse.
The relatively large amount of water in the can and the conductivity of the metal will keep it not much below freezing point. I wouldn't lick it but I don't think it will be especially dangerous.
Just be careful folks, Dry Ice is Carbon Dioxide!! Too much in an enclosed space will be lights out permanently! It would be better to find an alternative such as the fog juice sold in party stores and modify this to have a heater inside with a timer/controller to create the fog. Otherwise, it's a good how-to...

Hello i think that is a" cool " project lol..anyway i was looking to see if anyone has built a smoke machine caspable to be ued on a cars evap emissions test.., thats to check for leaks in the lines connecting from the fuel tank to the charcoal canister and so on..The machines that are sold for that cost $800.00 and up...I think this little machine can help achive the same outcome..I was hoping someone would have build one out of a smoker/fog machine..If you can build one please let me know....I thank you for your cool inventions and i will follow your builds thanks Jay...
Any idea of how long this will last, in terms of smoking?

Cheers
