Milk Tea

Milk tea is a very sweet tea that is often used in Boba. Boba is a drink consisting of tea and balls of tapioca and honey. This instructable, however, will only tell you how to make the tea. I will hopefully update it as soon as I can procure adequate tapioca balls to make the boba.

You can find some supplies such as flavor powders and tapioca balls at the Bubble Tea Supply website.

Step 1: Gather Materials

Picture of Gather Materials
For this instructable you will need the following:
-3/4 Black Tea
-5 Tablespoons of Sugar Syrup (More or less to taste)
-A Little Less than 2 Cups of Ice Cubes
-1/2 Cup of Milk (More or less to taste)
-A blender
-Various Measuring Utensils

For the sugar syrup you will need 1 cup of water and 1/2 cup of white and 1/2 cup of brown sugar.

Do not worry, I will tell you how to make the sugar syrup.

Step 2: Make the Sugar Syrup

Sugar syrup is what sets milk tea apart from black tea with milk. This step should be done first, as it will take a long time to complete.

-Boil 1 cup of water in a pan (yes, a pan).
-Add 1/2 cup of white and 1/2 cup of brown sugar (You can experiment with ratios).
-Turn the temperature to low and allow it to cook until all the sugar crystals have dissolved, gently stirring every few minutes. It should take about 25 minutes until the sugar has fully dissolved.
-Put the sugar syrup into a cup and put it in the fridge for later.

I suggest doubling the recipe, as this will only make about 4 servings of tea.

so milk and tea

very sugar
Nice recipe, I just tried it with a couple of variations. Instead of the sugar syrup, I used honey. Then, I only used one tea bag, which I found out was a mistake; there wasn't enough tea flavor (it's good but, it's too subtle for what I want). I'll try two tea bags next time :)
I whipped a ton of air into the mixture, which produces a lot of foam -- I wasn't expecting that at all. I think it's 'cause I used a regular tall blender. The foam is nice though, a happy accident
Hmm....would it be okay to use rice milk..?
Oo magic bullet=)
It's called ''Milky Brew''.

Black tea is just the plain, regular kind of tea, right?
Whaleman (author)  halberdear4 years ago
Yes, similar to English Breakfast Tea.

I LOVE drinking taro bubble tea at Jen Cafe on Newport place, China Town , London. I make a mango version at home and the brand of tapioca pearls I use is manufactured by WuFuYuan (www.wufuyuan.net). Hope this is of some help.
That sounds delicious! I've tried a mango boba slush at the Lollicup in my town. I've been having difficulty finding a recipe for the regular tea. Would you mind posting the recipe for your mango boba tea?

I like taro, too! I found a place, bubble tea supply, that sells powder and tapioca. The tapioca is about $4 per pound.
How much milk?!

I found that site almost exactly a year ago, though it'd probably be a good idea to put a link in there somewhere.

hmm... nice and the syrup might be useful in other drinks too. is there a way to flavor the syrup?
Whaleman (author)  Kaiven5 years ago
Maybe by boiling something else with the sugar and more sugar, but it has a pretty strong flavor, being a 1 to 1 ratio of sugar to water.
Kaiven Whaleman5 years ago
boiling something... like boil 1/3 grapes, 1/3 sugar, 1/3 water? the grapes might make it watery, and i was thinking that it would be SOOOOOO easy if i just put flavor in corn syrup. after all, corn syrup is mostly sugar water (i think) one sec, lemme go check... well, i just checked trhe label. it is very NOT helpful. it said light cornsyrup is made with light cornsyrup, highfructose cornsyrup, sugar, and real vanilla. well i guess i could use it to get the syrup consistancy...
Whaleman (author)  Kaiven5 years ago
I wouldn't do a third, and boiling stuff doesn't usually give flavor. I was thinking just adding a packet of a kind of tea or something, but I don't know how well that would work. Like I said, the flavor of sugar is pretty strong, especially in such quantities as to make the water a syrupy consistency.

is sugar syrup the same thing as maple syrup?
Whaleman (author)  kaerius5 years ago
No. It has no maple flavouring. It consists of, as the instructable says, 1/4 white sugar, 1/4 brown sugar, and 1/2 water that has been cooked in a pan for awhile.

It's Bubble Tea!!! (Without the bubbles, of course) Man, I've only ever bought the stuff, but it's nectar of the gods.
Whaleman (author)  Sergeant Crayon6 years ago
Indeed it is nectar of the gods! I need to find some of the 1/4" tapioca balls for the boba; I have recipes for lots of weird stuff, but I don't have the ingredients : (
