Mini S'mores Grill

I have my youngest son to thank for this Instructable. He wanted S'mores, but didn't want the marshmallows put in the microwave. He wanted authentic, toasted-on-an-open-flame S'mores.

When I told him that I did not really want to fire up the grill just to make a couple S'mores, he suggested a mini grill. BRILLIANT!

Step 1: Parts and Tools needed

SD532416.JPG
Parts:

(1) Cedar Plank
(4) Bolts - 1/4 inch and 2 and 1/2 inches tall
(4) Nuts - 1/4 inch
(4) Optional washers for the bolts
(1) 2.5oz Stainless Steel Condiment Cup (Four for 1$ at Wal-Mart)
(1) Box of cheap toothpicks
--NOT PICTURED--
(1) Box of matches
(1) Bag of large marshmallows
(1) Chocolate Bar
(1) Box of graham crackers
(1) Bamboo skewers, normally used for shish kabobs

Tools:
(1) Drill
(1) 2 and 1/2 inch drill bit
(1) 1/4 inch drill bit
(1) Saw

Step 2: Drilling, cutting, and drilling some more

I found out that I had to drill the large hole first. Otherwise, the board is too fragile to cut a large hole in.

Drill the large hole (2 and 1/2 inch bit) in the center of the cedar and about 1/2 inch away from the outside edge (see pic).

HANDY TIP: Put a scrap board underneath when cutting to prevent the wood from splintering.

Once that hole is drilled, measure about 1/2 inch away from the other side of the whole and cut (see pic).

When that piece is done, drill four holes in the corners with a 1/4 inch drill bit (see pic).

Step 3: Bolt it up and drop in the cup

SD532443.JPG
Insert a bolt into each hole and tighten it there with a nut (see pic).

When that is done, drop the cup in the hole (see pic).

A perfect fit!

Step 4: Fill it with toothpicks, light it up and start toasting marshmallows

WARNING!: Don't be dumb when playing with fire. Always keep a close watch on the fire and do this outside. Make sure you have a large amount of water or a fire extinguisher handy in case the fire spreads. You have been warned. Don't come whining to me if you burn something down or hurt yourself.

OK, now that we have settled that, on to the fire building. I only used a small group of cheap toothpicks (about 20). I broke them in half so they would rest in the bottom of the cup. You do not need the flame too high!

Get your marshmallow prepared by placing it on the end of a bamboo skewer. Place a piece of cholocate on top of a graham cracker. Have the other graham cracker piece ready to be placed on top.

Light the toothpicks with a match. I found that about 20 toothpicks in the cup can toast 2 marshmallows... maybe three, but I like mine nice and toasty (burned).

NOTE: Don't blow on your marshmallow when it's by the mini grill. My son did and it blew the lit toothpicks out of the cup! YIKES!

Once the marshmallow is toasted, place it on top of the chocolate and then put the other half of the graham cracker on top of that. Wait for the chocolate to get nice and melty and then enjoy your S'mores!

When you are done with the mini grill, pick it up by the edge of the cedar and run water into the cup to put out the fire. I also found that there is a pleasant cedar smell given off after using the grill.

ENJOY!

Interesting that nobody seems to have suggested using a Tealight in place of the broken toothpicks as your fire source. I always make toasted marshmallows by lighting a small tealight candle in a shot glass.

I have these cups. i was wondering what the hell i would need them for =]. i might use all 4 on one board. I've been roasting marshmallows on a penny stove recently but 4 tiny fire pits should work nicely. i thought about welding them together to make a penny stove lol. I want to see more instructables with these cups lol.

SWEET! i shaved a candle and placed a fair amount of the shavings in the cup with the toothpicks. it burns much longer and hotter! :)

Me and my friend just took a lighter, stuck a marshmellow on a fork, and roasted it with the lighter.

A better fuel would be pure isopropyl alcohol (rubbing alcohol).
It will produce a big flame with that size of opening but the products of the combustion are harmless - carbon dioxide and water vapour.

Take a look at this mini burner:

This is an excellently rendered version of the penny stove. Now I understand how it works. I couldn't with the versions here at Instructables. As the author said, missing pictures.....etc.

What do you mean when you say, "You have to drill the large hole first'? I don't quite understand your first and second paragraphs.

did you seriously use your xbox live avatar on instructables!? whaty is your gamertag?

I can't find the condiment server in any near by stores. My sister and I might want to make smores.
rexdino5 says: Jul 2, 2010. 12:56 AM
By the way where did you find a condiment server that doesn't melt the metal? Sorry if I have to many comment or questions,
rexdino5 says: Jul 2, 2010. 12:45 AM
I also my ante it up with some sheet metal. I might get a 1x by 1x foot plank and drill a hole in the middle and glue some legs to it or I'll see if they have 1/4 inch little cedar things at Home Deport. I could cut some little parts at the decoration and flooring center. I like Home Depot because for some reason I like cutting things... and I also like making things that whats so fun and building, is not knowing if you are going to fail or succeed on your project. I have failed many miserable times... but I have succeed a few times. I made two bird houses and one candle... sorta.
rexdino5 says: Jul 2, 2010. 12:38 AM
How does the cedar wood not burn up? Also is cedar like fire proof or something?
rexdino5 in reply to rexdino5Jul 2, 2010. 12:40 AM
Also do I have to get cedar wood or can I get any ordanary wood. Since I have a few 1 in thick boards in my grandpas garage but I don't know what type of wood it is....
Darkknight512 says: Jun 19, 2010. 8:02 PM
Nice, I made something similar with just a condiment cup sitting on a ceramic tile. I started the fire with toothpicks then threw some wood pellets in when the fire got hot, it stayed lit for a couple of minutes once the pellets caught.
paravou says: Jun 7, 2010. 2:05 PM
note: soak the bamboo skewers in water so they don't burn as well dropping said marshmallow into the fire.
micher54 says: Jun 1, 2010. 10:21 AM
I love my new mini grill!!  Thanks.  Can't wait to try it with the toothpicks...briquets really didn't work well.
DrWeird117 in reply to micher54Jun 2, 2010. 10:44 AM
Briquets didn't work because they need air flow.
