Introduction: Miniature Desk Shoji Shadow Boxes

Phoenix Laser Engraving creates these Shoji Shadow Box kits for sale in our Etsy shop http://phoenixlaser.etsy.com.

In traditional Japanese architecture, a Shoji is a door, window or room divider consisting of translucent paper over a frame of wood which holds together a sort of grid of wood or bamboo. (Shoji, 2009)

Shoji doors are often designed to slide open, and thus conserve space that would be required by a swinging door. They are used in traditional houses as well as Western-style housing, especially in the washitsu (Japanese-style room). (Shoji, 2009)

Phoenix Laser Engraving creates these beautiful Shoji Shadow Boxs from Birch Plywood, and we hand glue the paper to the inside to provide an elegant item.

These special Shoji Shadow Boxes are made for Bedside Tables, Romantic Nights, Cubical Desks, and hanging. The subtle light sets the mood and catches attention. The candle inside is battery operated so no worries.

Step 1: Download

Before you can create your Shoji Shadow Box you need to download the CorelDraw file we have attached to this Instructable.

Other items needed:
Rice Paper, or some sort of translucent paper.
Glue, we use glue stick
Battery operated mini light, or other sort of LED light (keep heat low).

Step 2: Cut Pieces

We have included several different designs in this instructable. You can cut all four sides of the Shoji Shadow Box the same, or mix it up a little. Or use the provided file as a template to design your own. If you do not have a laser cutter you can probably send the file you create to someone who does, or request it from us. I encourage others with laser cutters willing to do this sort of work to post their contact details and location in the comments area so those without laser cutters can find someone local to do the cutting.

Or if you want, you can print the pieces out on paper, and glue the paper to thin wood (3mm thick) and use a knife to cut out the shapes.

Step 3: Glue Paper Backing

Next cut paper to glue to the inside.

Step 4: Assemble (no Tools Required)

We designed these Shoji Shadow Boxes to be sold as flat pack items, with no hardware or tools required for assembly.

You just have to line up the corners and slide them together.

If you want you can glue the pieces together also.

This Instructable is being submitted to the USB contest, because many people will use a USB powered LED multi-color light to create a beautiful Desk Shoji Shadow Box.

Step 5: How to Buy One.

If you are unable to cut these you can buy a kit from our Etsy Shop.
