It doesn't really matter, the wheels are there mainly for weight. You see, if there were not any wheels, the catapult would fall over from the force of the rubber band every time something is fired. If you use wheels, the weight keeps the catapult down. Other than that, they serve no other function. So yes, gears are fine, they probably weigh enough!

I tried once... and I miserably failed. I might try again, but it has been long since I have picked up my k'nex. You're probably not interested, but lately, I'm spending my free time modding nerf guns (new hobby).

If you do want to try a modification, try modding a nerf nitefinder. These are really cheap (6 bucks!) and are probably the easiest to modify. Here is a nice nitefinder modification write-up:

Yeah, this was my first instructable, so I'll try to put up some clearer pictures soon. Or, I'll try to describe it now. See the picture in the intro of the instructable? That is basically the firing arm in its "pulled back" position, just without the rubber band. I always think it helps to understand the mechanism. In this, when you pull the arm back, the rubber band stretches. When you let go of the throwing arm, it snaps forward because of the rubber band. It hits the tower, abruptly stops, and you get to watch K'nex pieces fly. Please tell me if I should add more pictures or if you understand it now. It was my fault on poor explanation and little pictures.

yea it got it now lol i just had the whole arm turnd around on the 2 orange pieces on the base haha, i also found it helps to strenthen the base to keep it from snapping when you pull back Thanks ~DanLoney

Do you mean the black nob pieces on the firing arm? If so, no. I just used them to keep the blue spacers from falling off. The blue spacers are just used for centering purposes. Instead of the nob pieces you could use gray connectors. And you can use smaller wheels. I just prefer bigger ones. If I don't make sense, tell me. I want you and everybody else to have the maximum "experience" with this catapult.

I dont see where exactly I am to connect the two towers to. Am i connecting them in the white part of the base or am completley missing somthing. Also once I get that far where are the wheels attached to ?

Ahh, yes. I thought I was a bit unclear. Anyways, attach the two towers to the whit part of the base. Attach the smaller tower to one of the connectors and attach the other tower to the other white connector. When you get to the wheels, attach the wheels to the yellow connectors in the corners of the base. I'll try to put up pictures.
