I'm pretty sure defacing money is NOT a crime. However, defacing it with the intent to commit fraud IS a crime. So relax, folding money or drawing glasses on Lincoln will not result in a prison sentence.

That said, these examples of monetary origami are GREAT!!

Defacing Currency refers to the practice of filing or grinding metal off the rim of gold or silver coins, spending the coins and selling the filings for metal content. This practice led to U. S. silver and gold coins having a reeded edge so that the filing would be easily detected.

Writing your name (or any thing else) on a dollar bill is not illegal.
