Mosaic for Dummies

Turning a crapped-out kiddie table into a fancy side-table.

What you need:
- Table (I used an Ikea "Kritter" children's table from the as-is bargain area)
- Glass tiles or glass strips + glass cutter
- Glue (for glass/wood)
- Grout
- Kitten (not necessary, but entertaining!)

Step 1: Preparation

Clean your table properly - scrub off all dust and ickiness, so it will be relatively smooth.

If required, paint any areas that will not be covered by your mosaic, and leave to dry.

Step 2: Cutting the glass

Start cutting the glass strips into tiles the size you want to use them for the mosaic.

Step 3: Starting the mosaic

Decide on a pattern, and start sticking the glass tiles onto the table.

Stick on tiles until the entire area is covered completely.

Let glue dry (check the instructions on the particular glue you are using to be certain).

Step 4: Grouting

Prepare the grout - do not make it too runny. Your grout should have the consistency of heavy cream.

Spread the grout evenly so all the cracks between tiles are filled properly.

Leave to dry (about 30 mins), and then wipe off excess grout.

Step 5: Finishing off

Clean up, add kitten.

When I was a kid in the early 60's I use to help my Mother put mosaic tile on every thing around the house. One thing I do remember, that I didn't see on your neat table, was a metal rim around the edge of the table to protect the tile. It looked nice and helped hold the edge tiles from getting knocked off. Just a thought. Might help. I kitty is very cute.

I agree... it would be not as good without the kitten! LOL!
