Doing the laundry is a duty, not a gift. Seriously, who thinks doing that is an appropriate gift for mother's day?!

It's definitely appropriate. You're doing the laundry for her so she doesn't have to do it. It's a gift.

Maybe this is completely out of line for me to say, but it sort of frustrates me to see stuff like "how to clean your room" and "how to do laundry" in a list of Mother's Day gifts. I don't know, it just seems like more of an "all the time" thing and not one day a year.

true, they should be.  however, if you're the naughty kid like me who leaves dishes all over your room and piles clothes according to "dirty" "less dirty" and "probably clean, but i can't remember" across your floor and your mom typically feels compelled to take care of your filth, it certainly is a nice gesture.
