Motion Sensor

Motion Sensor
Hi all, this is my second instructable. I made this because I needed a motion sensor for my LED POV (Persistence Of Vision) project. It's used to detect when there's a change in the waving direction so that your POV display doesn't get inverted. There are plenty of great POV projects in Instructables, look it up!

Aside from using it in a POV device, you can also use it as a general purpose tilt sensor. The sensor is equivalent to two SPST (single-pole, single-throw) switch or a DPST (double-pole, single-throw) switch where only one pair of contacts is closed at any one time.

A metal ball bearing completes the electrical path between a pair of pins on either end of the tube. That's as simple as it gets.

Thank you soooo much for showing us this incredibly simple yet great idea.
I need a very simple and very small tilt sensor for an upcoming project, so thank you so much again.

just a question, would it be good to add a small notch on the inside middle of the tube so the sensor would not alway read left or right, like it could have a stable point??

You might also try a tube bent in a curve, varying the curve for the same reason you mention varying the angle of the v in your idea.

Clever!.. Ball bearing is stainless steel, right? So no oxidation problems? K.
