This is my first Instructable

If you haven't heard of the new craze called drift triking then you are missing out!

A drift trike consists of a tricycle with a pneumatic front wheel and hard plastic rear wheels.

The front wheel can have a freewheeling crank or foot pegs

Step 1: History

Drift Trikes are tricycles that have slick rear wheels, normally made from a hard plastic material. They are usually ridden on paved roads with a steep downhill gradient and some corners. Smooth roads are preferred to coarse chip sealed road as coarse surfaces tend to wear rear wheels faster.

Riders gather momentum through gravity, although some drift trikes have pedals. Pedals are useful for slow speed riding, but are of no use at high speed. Drift trikes can reach speeds of up to 90km/h, but the normal operating speed is between 25 and 65km/h.

Drift trikes have come along way, one of the first mass produced trike was the Huffy slider as pictured.

Many people upgrade huffy sliders where as some build them from scratch. In this instructable I will be using the front end from the slider and building a bolt on MOTORIZED rear end.

Most of the parts can be bought bought from the hardware and the rest from eBay.

Id like to know what size drive your engine has, because i have an 87 cc 1/2 inch drive that i am trying to find a pinion and sprocket for...PLEASE help me!
mmkaliski says: Feb 21, 2013. 10:43 PM
I notice that this engine does not have a transmission. Do you think the same engine with a transmission (as seen on ebay) would be better or worse for drifting.
And another quick question, can it hold long drifts around corners? Just wondering.

What Wheels did you use?
grapenut says: Oct 22, 2012. 12:38 AM
Just to clarify; Why is it that your feet are not going around in circles (on the pedals) as the trike moves forward. Is there some type of free spooling sprocket or something up there that works similarly to most rear wheel sprockets. I probably used all the wrong terms, but I hope you get my meanin.
mitch and sean in reply to grapenutDec 20, 2012. 9:22 PM
on my one im just going to rig some stunt pegs on just as foot pegs
josh333 (author) in reply to grapenutOct 26, 2012. 2:35 PM
Yep, there is a freewheel mechanism in the front hub which stops them from spinning..
mitch and sean says: Dec 20, 2012. 9:20 PM

bmccourt says: Oct 23, 2012. 5:14 AM

josh333 (author) in reply to bmccourtOct 26, 2012. 2:35 PM

bmccourt in reply to josh333Oct 27, 2012. 1:39 AM
what about the pilow bearings?
kidgambit says: Jun 8, 2012. 10:59 PM
could u use the same nut tighten like u did with the wheel to the sprocket
joshthegreat says: Mar 9, 2012. 12:01 PM
ok so this might be stupid but whats the purpose of the wheel hub next to the sproket....

to be honest i dont reall know what a wheel hub is
msottile1 says: Oct 31, 2011. 9:41 AM
I can't find wheel hub to fix the sprocket! Can you post a link please?
nibbler125 says: Aug 22, 2011. 6:43 PM
you have to much rake on the front wheel. The forks should be at a 90degree angle to the ground. it will help you drift allot.
yungThinker says: Aug 21, 2011. 12:17 PM
over all how much did it cost to make because i am thinking of making one and are on a low budget,
karnold70 says: Aug 16, 2011. 10:05 AM
Hmmmm.. (evil genius brain bubbling). I'm a big guy (around 300 and over six foot) I love the idea, but I think I'd definatly have to build my own frame. Possibly use a BMX type tire for the front. What do you guys think about using an electric scooter motor with some smallish deep cycle batts?
TSC says: Jul 28, 2011. 8:27 AM
Did you get this from brendonv from youtube! Cause he built some thing like this!
oud25 says: Jul 27, 2011. 4:08 PM
not wanting to sound stupid but couldnt you just replace the sproket in a chainsaw motor and put a direct chain to the axle, and then reroute the engine brake to the handle which would kill the engine and stop the chain in an emergency but thats only if it decides to roll or something
dude-man-13 says: Jul 25, 2011. 7:06 PM
how much did all of this cost?
BarcodeZombie says: Jul 24, 2011. 1:06 PM
That looks absolute mentalness , just please tell me that the water bottle aint got your twostroke mix in it
josh333 (author) in reply to BarcodeZombieJul 25, 2011. 4:44 AM
only for a day!! I was desperate to try it and my propper mower tank had not come yet
BarcodeZombie in reply to josh333Jul 25, 2011. 8:36 AM
A Fairy washing up liquid bottle makes quite a good temporary/bodge fuel tank with the fuel line over the nozzle :) also supply for when you have to balance bike carbs :) Keep it shiny side up
bowmaster says: Jul 18, 2011. 2:54 PM
Do you think a 190cc lawn-mower engine would work? I know it had 6.25 ft-lbs of torque, but I don't know about HP.
josh333 (author) in reply to bowmasterJul 18, 2011. 9:48 PM
Im sure it would have more than enough power..
afoster2 says: Jul 8, 2011. 6:49 AM
where did you get the wheel hub?
josh333 (author) in reply to afoster2Jul 11, 2011. 1:22 AM
eBay 10 inch wheel, 16mm bearing
WolfVecho says: Jul 10, 2011. 4:12 AM
I like this idea, looks like a load of bone breaking fun.

my sis and I used to do drifting on our skateboards when we were kids using an old flipflop or shoe as a break.

I'd like to try this. Cheers for the concept.

My work buddy and I were lucky enough to score six trikes from the shuttered Alcoa plant next door to the brewery. The trikes were the maintence staff baikes and were not part of the liquidation auction as management held them back for the guys who may have wanted thier old work bikes..
none of them did... so, after everything was said and done, The (now former ) plant manager came over and told us ( since we had expressed an interest in them ) to come get them!
I got three, jay got three.. most of them were in a state of disrepair and/or neglect, but repairs were easy.

you could call around some large factories in your area and ask if they use tricycle in the maintenance department, and if they do, if any of them are graveyarded and in need of a home.

ftwopointeight in reply to josh333Jul 7, 2011. 6:11 PM
If I could spell, it would be different =) That's www.worksmancycles.com I got a basic complete Industrial bike minus the front drum brake.

Dannne11 says: Jul 7, 2011. 12:14 PM
Do you think i can use a 39 CC engine with slip clutch??
josh333 (author) in reply to Dannne11Jul 7, 2011. 3:37 PM
You could, would have to be geared differently as I am sure a weed wacker engine outputs a lot less power than a pocket bike engine.
