Mug Brownie

By now I'm sure everyone and their grandmother has seen the Dizzy Dee microwave chocolate cake in a mug. However, whenever I've made it, I've found it to be somewhat gelatinous and, quite frankly, not really chocolatey. In its stead, here's a brownie recipe that I've been using for a while and with which I've gotten MUCH better result. Note: This really is more for those of you who prefer "fudgey" brownies to "cakey" ones.

4 Tablespoons Flour
4 Tablespoons Sugar
2 Tablespoons Cocoa powder (Note: don't use cocoa mix or quik, it shouldn't have any sugar)
2 Tablepsoons Vegetable Oil (Don't use one with a strong flavor, eg olive, sesame, etc)
2 Tablespoons Water
Dash of salt

Step 1: Mixing

Picture of Mixing
Add the sugar, flour, cocoa, and salt to the mug and mix. Then add the oil and water and mix the dry and wet ingredients together. Be sure to be thorough, there's a tendency for clumps of the dry ingredients to form

Step 2: Microwaving

Picture of Microwaving
Microwave on high for roughly a minute. You may have to microwave it longer or shorter, depending on your microwave, but the brownie should still be wet in the center when done.

Step 3: Nomming

It's done! Let it cool, grab a spoon, and dig in straight from the mug.

I recommend adding a scoop of ice cream for maximum deliciousness.

This was really good! I guess I under-cook it a little so it's halfway between fudgy and batter-like. You can cook it for longer to have something fluffy and cake-like in texture, but remember that a microwave doesn't heat things evenly.

I see modifications on here, but they seem inconvenient(melting butter, more dishes to wash, pricier ingredients), which takes away from the appeal of a mug dessert a little bit, so here is my detailed method that has worked every time:
Add ingredients to mug in this order.

2 TBSP Water
- Microwave for 30 sec
1/2 to 1 TSP Instant coffee (Optional, but enhances flavor)
2 TBSP Vegetable oil
3 to 4 TBSP Sugar
Dash of salt
2 TBSP Cocoa powder
4 TBSP Flour
- Microwave for 1 min

Stir well after every addition with a fork. And for the cocoa and flour, stir after every tablespoon you add.
But I always cut the recipe in half because it's rich, and I'll microwave for 30 sec instead

Chocolate chips
Walnut pieces
Nutella spread
Scoop of vanilla ice cream

This was yum. Simple & gooey.

I did find this recipe a little sweet for my pallet, so in future I'm going to try reducing the sugar, or swapping it out for apple syrup (Appelstroop).

Just made this with my 10 yr old daughter. {Chocolate Attack} turned out awesome and so easy too. I used real butter instead of oil because I only had EVOO. One happy kiddo. Chocolate attack satisfied.

Hey guys I made this mug brownie recipe but it turned out like a spongy slimy mess, not sure why.

Here is how I tweaked it from using the comments and it turned out perfect, nice and flavorful with the best texture. These are all things you will find in your common household kitchen:

(Mix the wet and dry ingredients in separate bowls, add the liquids to the dries and stir thoroughly with a wisk then pour into an evenly portioned mug. Cook for 50 seconds in the microwave, then in 10 second intervals until its not super gooey looking.)

-4 tbs. all purpose flour
-3 tbs. cane sugar
-1 tbs. brown sugar
-1 tbs. cocoa powder
-1 tbs. hot cocoa mix
-small pinch of salt
-small pinch of baking powder

-1/4 tsp. vanilla extract
-2 tbs. milk (I used 2%)
-2 tbs. hot melted butter

I really wish I had found your comment a long time ago! So much better than the org. recipe! But try some instant coffee in there. Omg! Takes it to the next level...

yours was amazing!!!!!!!!!

Oh my god! I just made this but because I was desperate and out of cocoa so I used some double chocolate hot cocoa mix and cut the sugar a bit. I didn't realize that I used a half tablespoon instead of a full one so I had half as much but that's probably for the better lol.

I found it on a different website, but it was pretty good... I also found it tasted like flour, until i realized that in my rush to eat, I forgot vanilla and salt. It is also much easier to whisk it, especially if you are making larger amounts.

Thanks for the great recipe! =)

I tried it, used the same ingredients, but added mini marshmallows, semi-sweet chocolate chips, and hershey's chocolate sauce. It. was. delicious.

Just tried it and it's amazing! I probably should have waited and let it cool, though...

yumm! it tastes really good but i do have to advise that you should read the whole thing first instead of just putting in everything at once like what i did since i dont have a flair in baking (microwaving for this) i put the wet and dry ingredients in at the same time and i put it in for 2 minutes oh my it was disgusting because the sides got so burnt that it felt like peanuts! i tried it again the next day and this time properly and wow it tastes so good and so different i advise putting chocolate syrup ontop if you are craving that choclatety taste :)

I have tried mug brownies in the past and have not been able to eat more than a few bites because they were so bad, but after a late night hunger pang I decided to try this one and it was delicious! I ate the whole thing drizzled with salted caramel syrup and whipped cream. Thanks!

I like to make a batch in a plastic container so I can make this very often without having to do the annoying stirring all the time and it's always stirred to perfection. To do this I measure in cups instead of tablespoons. My recipe is:

2 cups of flour
2 cups of sugar
1 cup of cacao
1 cup of melted butter
1 cup of water
a splash of vanilla extract
some salt

I tend to microwave it for about 1:20 but it really depends on how much batter you put in your mug.

Protip: Add the dry ingredients first and mix those before adding the liquids. To do this easily close the lid of the plastic container and shake instead of stirring, its a lot easier :)

Protip 2: Use a (semi-) clear container so you can locate any area's that haven't been mixed properly.

pregnant lady craving chocolate brownies here. I had to try this. I was plesantly surprised. I wouldnt say its as good as taking the time to make one in the oven properly, but this will definately do in a pinch.

try melted butter instead of oil

This is one of the best mug brownies I've ever had. Thank-you. ^_^

It was delicious.

As for the posts about it being or tasting "floury", the batter needs to be REALLY well mixed. It's a pretty thick batter, but mixing it really well is the trick to making this really spectacular.

Has anyone ever experimented with substituting plain Greek yogurt for the fat (oil and/or butter)?
Yes i just did this with melted butter instead of oil. I also put 1/4 tsp of vanilla in with the water. Quite delicious. I wish I had ice cream to put on top!

It tasted like FLOUR!! but in some cases it was good just maybe 2 tbsp. of flour?

were you using corn flour :P?

this was so good i made an account to comment. i did change a few things, like 1 of the tablespoons i did hot cocoa mix instead of cocoa powder, instead of the oil i used melted butter, and i used milk instead of water. i also put some chocolate chips on top until they melted and spread them around till it was like frosting. MMMMMM!!!!!!coudnt have been better(but i would to 1/8 tsp of salt instead of a dash because the 1st time i did to much because it wasnt clear but other than that it was the most delicious thing ive ever had!!!)definently will satisfy your brownie craving. :D

I also made an account :P

THE MOST AMAZING EVER! i chop and change it a little every now and again after 7days of a repetitive taste!! like i substitute the water for milk and some vanilla essence and some cocoa for coffee! pretty much anything works here. Again: AMAZING

I love it and my family loved it. It's fantabulous!!!!!!

It tastes and looks SOOOOO good!

Just tried it , my oil made it taste nasty. I think it was expired. :( but besides that it was pretty good. I loved the amount of chocolate and I loved the texture. Mmmmmmm,...... Love it,
I do this all the time when I'm too lazy to make real brownies. :)
Minecraft Freak made it!1 year ago

I loved the recipe! ave it to my dad, mom, and grandma. We all enjoyed it very much. Thanks!

mix reeeeeeeeeeeely well
I had high hopes from this recipe but it gave me a ducking stomach ache. Smells and tastes floury. I followed the instructions to the T but sadly, it came out horrible. The texture was not bad but the taste was. Imma try it with some variations and see if it works.
thats 2 bad.. :(
