It's done! Let it cool, grab a spoon, and dig in straight from the mug.

I recommend adding a scoop of ice cream for maximum deliciousness.

WTF??? (what the fudge...) I accidently over cooked my brownie and I tried it, it tasted like canola oil!?? ):
Catnip216 in reply to evindrewsJan 23, 2013. 3:11 PM
Mine tasted like oil too, and I also used canola. I might try less of it next time, or using a different kind of oil, maybe melted butter

Didn't realize the comment was a couple of years old, haha, apologies

This is the absolute worst thing I've ever put in my mouth. I followed the recipe exactly, and all I could taste was flour and vegetable oil blended with really unsweet cocoa.. Blegh... my bottomless pit of a chocolate eating child even spit it out. I do NOT recommend this recipe. I do however recommend that if you do decide to make it... use some of the different alterations people have mentioned in the comments.

i've used a few different recipies for this and they all turned out very bland and terrible. This one is the best i have had so far, but the mix did not fit in a normal mug. I had to make it in a bowl instead.

Also, if you're Australia, substituting Milo for the cocoa powder and putting in a little less sugar works brilliantly!

OH MY GOODNESS! I needed a brownie fix bad so I used this recipe except I didn't have the cocoa powder! I used 3 dove dark chocolate silky smooth promises instead, and added a little vanilla extract and cinnamon, and brown sugar for the sugar... Decadence! It tasted like a super-moist brownie cake, perfect for a choco-quick fix. it was like chocolate heaven in a bowl (i used a bowl instead of a mug). Thanks for this rad recipe!

This is so good, I followed it exactly as it said and it turned out perfectly!
bdalrymple says: Apr 16, 2011. 8:10 PM
Well, I figured it was definitely time to give it a try. Substituted hot cocoa for actual cocoa powder and I do NOT recommend this at all. Well, for anyone trying to obtain a decent brownie. If you're just after a mug of chocolate sludge, go right ahead.
evindrews in reply to bdalrympleSep 28, 2011. 3:37 PM
...Well, it says in the recipe COCOA POWDER not hot chocolate mix, don't be so critical.
shirleyewejest in reply to evindrewsOct 17, 2011. 9:37 AM
She was SAYING she substituted and that her substitution is not recommended. She's not dinging the actual recipe.
Kikkoman56 in reply to bdalrympleMay 29, 2011. 12:38 AM
i used actual cocoa powder as well, and the instructions given for cooking time will produce just sludge. But if you microwave it for a few more minutes till when you tilt the bowl the batter does not move its done. Makes it much more nicer while still being moist.
Goodhart in reply to Kikkoman56Dec 27, 2012. 6:41 PM
Power output of microwaves varies quite a bit
ZyZZyvette in reply to Kikkoman56Sep 21, 2011. 10:49 PM
Yeah I used 4tbsp hot chocolate mix and 2 tbsp sugar (to compensate for having less cocoa and more sugar in the mix than would be in the cocoa) and after two minutes it still wasn't quite brownielike, but it was tasty and good enough for an Emergency Brownie. Next time I will have to try microwaving it a minute or so longer.
lyoung20 says: Oct 6, 2011. 7:40 PM
I made mine with melted Earth Balance instead of canola oil (I am out) and it turned out wonderfully! I put a small scoop of peanut butter on top after microwaving. ^_^
Facsimile says: Aug 26, 2011. 5:25 PM
This looks delicious, I will definitely try this. :)
asmith92 says: Aug 18, 2011. 9:01 AM
Mine came out with a crusty top and gooey inside - just like the molten cake brownies I used to get as a kid. <3 Loved it!

(I also double the recipe, as I used a soup mug. And I'm a glutton.)

Super easy recipe and tasty too.
I subbed organic sugar to make this recipe vegan.
FYI: Sugar companies use animal bones to whiten your white and brown sugar. The only difference between the two, amongst the big companies, is that brown sugar has coloring added to it. Organic or raw sugar is about the only way to get sugar that isn't adulterated.

Thanks for the recipe!
victorian_lace in reply to ecat1Jun 17, 2011. 11:28 AM
Ok, first of all, just because something is *organic* doesn't automatically mean it's *vegan*. All organic means is the food is-

"produced without using: most conventional pesticides; fertilizers made with synthetic ingredients or sewage sludge; bioengineering; or ionizing radiation." Also, meat and animal by-products "come from animals that are given no antibiotics or growth hormones." (see The USDA National Organic Program definition of organic.)

Raw Sugar is the left overs from processing sugar cane for molasses and white sugar.

Brown sugar doesn't have "coloring". It contains molasses, which is a by-product of making sugar.

White sugar doesn't always use animal bones. It varies by company and is becoming less common.
aros in reply to ecat1Jun 17, 2011. 4:20 AM
Not all sugar companies use animal bones, quite a lot don't (in the UK the two major sugar brands don't). So you can use conventional sugar as long as you look into which companies use animal bones and which don't.

If you layer the cake mix with a couple of slices and frozen banana AND a spoonful of nutella it adds untold levels of deliciousness! (And quite a few calories, it's the price we have to pay...)
kmorgan-1 says: Mar 6, 2011. 3:11 PM
I... followed all instructions and ended up with a molten rubbery mess :/
Maybe it was the cake flour? It was the only flour i had on hand, so i was hopeful.
glad to see other people have had happy brownies out if this, sad that i was not one of them
profeana says: Mar 2, 2011. 6:08 PM
This is absolutely delicious. I have played around a lot with the recipe. I really enjoy adding a splash of vanilla or almond extract. And I agree with chiodo4766, adding nutella makes for an amazing gooey surprise. 1/2 a recipe is definitely enough to fill me up, and plenty of calories for anyone who is interested in that.

Hmmmm I'm eating this at the moment...It's delicious! Thanks for the recipe, I've been trying other recipes but thet were too dry.

this is my response to the above too: all amounts are multiples of two (make a 1/2 recipie
geekazoid in reply to Armchair PyroJun 23, 2010. 9:54 AM
I agree, but also I'd microwave it for less time. 40 Seconds was sufficient for me, when I halved the recipe.
Armchair Pyro in reply to geekazoidAug 2, 2010. 6:56 PM
I always make a 1/2 recipe. I find 55 seconds works best in my opinion. P.S. "I recommend adding a scoop of ice cream for maximum deliciousness." with a dash of cinnamon on top

this is the best recipe!!! it has saved myself and my roommates when we need our quick chocolate fix! fast, easy, and delicious! :) i also throw in chocolate chips, peanut butter or nutella for a gooey surprise.
