Step 1: Make your cookie dough

Picture of Make your cookie dough
Make a solid cookie dough recipe.  I strongly recommend Perfect Sugar Cookies, as this recipe is formulated specifically to be used with complex cookie designs and not spread too much while baking.   For this batch, I used half vanilla extract and half almond extract - just to mix it up a bit.

While the dough is chilling, it's time to make your cookie cutters!

Step 2: Prep materials

Gather a few soda cans, a loaded stapler a ruler, a carpet knife, and some strong shears.  My cutters took about one can per shape.

First I cut the tops and bottoms off of the cleaned soda cans with the knife.

Then I cut a line vertically through the can with the scissors.

Next I used a ruler to measure and guide my knife to cut the sheets into long strips (about 3/4" wide).

Then staple some strips together.  Now you're ready to make mustaches!

Step 3: Design your 'stache

Draft up some mustache designs (or print off mine!).

Then bend your aluminum strips to fit the shape of your designs.  Even the staples will bend.

Staple together the finished piece and trim away excess.

I next added handles to the cutters to help them keep their shape and make it easier to lift them from the dough later on.

How did you keep the aluminum from curling? Thanks!

I made these for Wendy's baby shower.... and not only were the cookies delicious, but they were sturdy and strong enough to hold up to people waving them around at the party, and posing with them in photos!

Thanks for the great i'ble miss super amazing food editor!

Ok, I only had time to make 2 cookie cutters because it was getting kind of tricky to control all the sharp edges with a three year old around...but, here they are and I have my dough in the fridge to chill. I'll be handing out these pretty cookies for my little season finale Downton Abbey party. I know no one rocks a stache on the show, I just thought they were fancy. Thanks for the stencil!
Finished product.

With the help of these shortbread shenanigans, I shall share the joy of shooting a shot of me showing a showy moustache, that shan't be a shabby shade of shadowy facial hair, but shall indeed be a shake up; shortbread moustaches!

Ahh, the associated chivalry...!
This is really clever!
