Mustache cookie pops - the first edible disguise!  Make your own cookie cutters from soda cans, then use them to make awesome mustache cookies - and put them on sticks.  Instant mustache party!

Saucy up your next event with these mustache cookie pops.  Everyone loves a prop they can eat!

Step 1: Make Your Cookie Dough

Make a solid cookie dough recipe.  I strongly recommend Perfect Sugar Cookies, as this recipe is formulated specifically to be used with complex cookie designs and not spread too much while baking.   For this batch, I used half vanilla extract and half almond extract - just to mix it up a bit.

While the dough is chilling, it's time to make your cookie cutters!

Step 2: Prep Materials

Gather a few soda cans, a loaded stapler a ruler, a carpet knife, and some strong shears.  My cutters took about one can per shape.

First I cut the tops and bottoms off of the cleaned soda cans with the knife.

Then I cut a line vertically through the can with the scissors.

Next I used a ruler to measure and guide my knife to cut the sheets into long strips (about 3/4" wide).

Then staple some strips together.  Now you're ready to make mustaches!

Step 3: Design Your 'stache

Draft up some mustache designs (or print off mine!).

Then bend your aluminum strips to fit the shape of your designs.  Even the staples will bend.

Staple together the finished piece and trim away excess.

I next added handles to the cutters to help them keep their shape and make it easier to lift them from the dough later on.

Step 4: Cut Cookies

After the dough has been well chilled, roll it out to about 1/4" (6mm) thickness between two sheets of plastic wrap.  Using plastic wrap instead of flouring the surface means you can re-roll the dough scraps several times without them getting tough from adding too much flour!

Firmly press your cutters into the dough.  Lift the plastic wrap from the counter to help separate the cookie shapes, and place them on a lined baking sheet.  Gently insert sticks into the dough .

Bake according to recipe directions.  These were baked at 350F (180C) for 12 minutes.  Rotate the baking sheet halfway through the baking time to ensure even browning.

As you can see, the cookies spread very little in the oven, and maintained their distinct shapes!

Step 5: Decorate!

Use tempered chocolate or your favorite icing recipe to pipe or spread designs onto your baked and cooled cookies.  The rest is up to you!  Choose zany colors, add sprinkles - there's no limit to how silly your mustaches can be.

Step 6: Strike a Pose!

People intuitively understand that before they can eat their mustache cookie, they need to strut around with it for a bit.  Make sure you have a camera ready, and encourage everyone to channel whatever character their chosen mustache brings out in them.  Let them know it's ok to try out a few before they find the right fit.

Enjoy!
