My Awesome Led Cube

This is my version of the awesome led cube, its made of acetate sheets (translucent) and the a Pepsi can, with a multicoloured led circuit I from a cheap pen torch. I designed the 6th side of the cube to match the previous 5.

Turning 26(?) of these into a Rubik's Cube shouldn,t be too tricky - providing you can scale the Cube's mechanism up sufficiently...

Scaling these down to fit a Rubik's Cube mechanism would be rather more so...

Having the resultant Cube light/not light up in specific ways, depending on the combinations may well be nigh-on impossible... ;-)

There is probably no need to waste hot glue to create translucent effect,merely rub the inside surface of the acetate (perspex) with an abrasive sheet and you will "frost " up the box. For simple colour changing use a rainbow LED these are self contained led's with colour change built in (they need 4.5 volts though - so use 3 X 1.5 button cells). Great little projects like this can spark off many ideas,so well done.

How is it controlled? Does it sense contact on the metal, or does it just cycle through the colours? Where is the on-off switch?

See the little black pin thing sticking out of the circle in the center? thats the on\ off switch and u can make a circuit that switches on if it senses metal???

If that was a question, then you can get the batery on one side, and the other end of the wire 1cm away, then when touching a conductive metal, it would comp[lete the circuit, and light the LED. When you moved it away from the conductive metal, it would stop.

Yeah your right. i've seen like 5 LED cubes. i just wish i could actually make this stuff. my parents are kinda strict, so if i was buying LED's and translucent acetate sheets they wouldn't let me even think about making these. =(

What did you use to cut the soda can? The edges to the armor pieces look very straight, and look like they lay very close to the surface of the cube.

the humble pair of scissors works well enough....soda cans arnt that thick..on the other hand if you plan on using a tin can, shears or a rotatory tool, works well enough.....but they are a pain in the behind to straighten out..

well, its kinda kiddish...back when i was younger, me and my buddies were wayy into greco-roman mythology, so we used to pick out personalities we thought were cool-ish..and as luck has it..i became lordhades...(i have to admit, i was one evil kid)..but as we grew, it stuck......so i've been lordhades for about 6 years...

as a matter of fact i did, but i used the one with 5 faces, i chose to design the 6th one myself.. p.s. - I would love to see yours, so why dont you post a few pics.

mmm, the result is awesome for the small amount of work. But i like the design very very much, why don't some spent the taime to make a mold to make the metal part out of lead, 1/4" wide, the put some semi(translucent silicon in the gap between the different isle of lead ? that surely would we amazing. I don't have what I need to mold lead, but maybe I can try doing it out of cement... got to try ! (oups, no time to try if now :(, please someone do it !

OK let me add, I'm from India. Silicon molds? that's like finding plutonium in a local American hardware store.Not to mention that the fact that I'm 16 would put me trouble if I go around searching for lead any where! but I surely would love to see something of that sort made by someone with the resources.

ok, lead was just an indea, but making a mold from scrap wood and carving the wood to make the drawings on the cube, then making the cube with cement is certainly possible in most part of the word. No the last probleme would be to find something else than silicon which can be put in the drawings on the cube... Maybe some bee wax or any synthétic imitation may suit. maybe some (hot ?) glue can also do the trick. Polyurethan / epoxy resin would certainly work well also (though might not be aviable or affodable to some). It might be possible to paint the cement before the wax / glue / resin is added in the gaps, and to includ some craps things (struts, metal wire, ...) in it. I like this design, and I'd like two see what can be done by spending 10 hours of work on the making :) Anyway, I really like the (simple) idea of doing it with soda can. Amazinf how many things can be done with soda cans :)

srsly u guys are grossly over-estimating how much work i did for this..... i just made two cubes from acetate connected them with cello-tape and glued the premade circuit right in the center and then covered it with a pepsi can.

Unfortunately my camera is really f...ed right now so i just took as many pictures in one go as i could so no insides as yet, however there is nothing there worth seeing its just a matchstich holding the led near the center and an other stabilising it. also i didnt make any circuit i got it from a pen torch thing i had lying around.

I also made one. i had a super bright Led and a standard blue, just ran them off 2 button cells nothing complicated what i wanted to do was get a photo cell so it would turn on at night but i never finished that circuit.
