Introduction: My Delectably Delicious Caramel Popcorn

About: This profile is comprised of the instructions written by my Composition 101 students. The assignment was intent to get them thinking about how to explain and teach how to complete a given process to a group. …

Hello! I am so excited to know that there are other caramel popcorn lovers out there like myself. Well enough chit chat; let's go on to the good stuff. This is my favorite kind of Caramel Popcorn. This is the perfect treat to make when you have a lot of friends or family coming over. It only takes me about 10-15 minutes to make. The first time I made it, it took me about 20 minutes. If you are in a hurry, this is a great snack for the sake of time and everybody's taste buds. Let's get started!!

Step 1: Ingredients and Materials Needed

Before we get too far, let's see if you have all the ingredients and materials needed for this snack.

 INGREDIENTS:
  2 cups of brown sugar
  1 cube of butter
  1 cup of corn syrup
1 can of sweetened condensed milk
  vegetable oil or olive oil
  popcorn

 MATERIALS:
  1 big pot
  1 big sauce pan
  1 big bowl
  2 big spoons
  measuring cups

Alright! Now that we have everything, we can move on.

Step 2: Popcorn Popping

A lot of people have popcorn poppers that automatically pop the popcorn. However  I do not have one of those nifty little contraptions, so I pop popcorn the old fashioned way (on the stove). Since I am deprived of a popcorn popper, popping popcorn takes a little while. Not to worry though, we can pop it at the same time we make the caramel yumminess which cuts back the time and the popcorn will still be hot. I will show you my way of popping popcorn. For the sake of beginners, I will explain the easier way to do this (which is to pop the popcorn first then make the sticky stuff).

Take your big pot and set it on the stove. Turn your stove on to about medium high or high. Next, pour the olive or vegetable oil into the pot so that it just barely completely covers the entire bottom of the pot. Plop in about 3 colonels of popcorn and wait until they pop.
Once they begin to pop, pour in more colonels of popcorn until they barely completely cover the oil. Put a lid on your pot and wait for the popcorn. Shake the pot occasionally so that the popcorn doesnt burn. After the popping slows down and it comes to an end take it off the stove and pour the popcorn into your bowl. Watch out for unpopped colonels and if you can, avoid letting them into the rest of the popcorn.

Step 3: The Good Stuff

This part can get a little crazy because you need to be stirring at all times or else it will burn.

Turn on your stove to medium high. Place your big sauce pan on the stove and put in your cube of butter. Next add your brown sugar. Make sure that it is packed. Then put in your cup of corn syrup and mix it all together. Remember to stir constantly. It will be a darkish gold color. Keep stirring until it starts to boil all the way through.

Step 4: The Rest of the Good Stuff

Once it starts boiling it should be a lighter gold color. Mix in the can of sweetened condensed milk. Depending on if your sweetened condensed milk is lighter or a darker yellow, the color of your caramel will be either a light gold or a dark gold but it should never be brown. Stir constantly for about 1-2 more minutes and then take it off of the heat.

Bring it over to your bowl of popcorn and gently pour the caramel into it. After it is all in with the popcorn, place your sauce pan into the sink so that it can soak (easier clean up purposes). Take your 2 big spoons and start mixing the caramel into the popcorn allowing it to spread to each peice.

For finishing touches, go through the popcorn, with a spoon, searching for left over popcorn colonels. Then Bon Appetite!!!! Enjoy! Thank you for putting your trust in me and trying My Delectably Delicious Caramel Popcorn!
