My Hipster PDA

Step 6ASSEMBLE the PDA

ASSEMBLE the PDA
Assembly is very straightforward.
Stack up your cards, printed side facing up, holes on the bottom.
Put the back cover printed side facing down on the bottom of the stack.
Put the front cover printed side facing up on the top of the stack.
Insert your dividers as you like.
Put one binder ring through each hole and snap shut.

A note on my use of dividers:
I only have two dividers which gives me three sections.
The first section is for my to-do lists.
The second section is for my shopping lists.
The third section is for everything else, which for me is project notes, reference information, and blank cards.

A note on fasteners:
I first tried binder clips like the original Hipster PDA instructions suggest, but I found it awkward for two reasons. One, the clip got in the way of browsing through the cards - either I really bent the cards out of shape or I couldn't read half the card. Two, you can only effectively write on the top card. This meant if I wanted to work with a card I had to unclip the stack, reorder the cards so the one I wanted was on top, then clip it back together. Not impossible but not convenient either.

The rings let me look through the stack quickly and easily, I can see the whole card, and I can very easily flip any card to the top for writing on. the downside is I have to punch holes in the cards, which is more work during the assembly stage. It's a trade-off of more work during assembly vs. more work during field use. To me, I'd rather do the work in the comfort of my own home rather than in the middle of a busy supermarket.
