Introduction: My Forge (mi Fragua)

About: I am leaving Instructables, soon. I am very upset with the turnaround that has the page to post the manufacture of a dildo. Me llamo Osvaldo Julio Schiavoni I speak Spanish, not English. I use automatic tran…

A continuación detallo cómo fui haciendo mi fragua.

Some time ago I was thinking I need a forge, to tempering and/or case-harding tools, especially cutting, for smelting aluminum, bend thick iron, etc, etc.

When I was a kid, one of my jobs was to turn the crank of the smithy of my father, and then watch ecstatic
how he was reshaped pieces of iron or steel, creating valuable tools that endure today, after sixty years.

Here's how I was doing my forge. Unfortunately some photos were taken when the piece was done, but you are very astute and realize the process.

Step 1: La Cazoleta (the Bowl)

This is the part that will contain the fire, so it must be resistant to high temperatures. I chose a red ceramic pot, rather small size. It should't be very big, unless you need to heat large pieces, which is not my case. I eliminated the thick band around thetop of the flower pot, enlarged the hole in the bottom, and built a metal cage around the pot with 4mm steel wire. The cage is designed to hold the pot together, because it will eventually fracture from the heat.

Step 2: La Rejilla (the Grate)

As the coal is burned, ash will fill up the bowl smothering the coal. Therefore, there must be a grate that holds the burning coal and allows the ash to fall under the bowl. It is made of the same 4 mm steel wire.

Step 3: La Base (the Base)

I used the back cover of an old electric motor that was beyond repair. I could also have used a motorcycle sprocket, a brake rotor, etc.

At the center hole of the former engine cover, where was the axis, I welded a short galvanized nipple to connect the base with the air pipe.

Step 4: El Tubo De Aire (the Air Pipe)

The fire of the forge must receive a flow of air to increase the heat of the coal. I used a piece of some 40 cm of 3/4 inch iron pipe, which years ago was galvanized and now is almost a heap of rust, but for the case serves well. To connect to the base I didn't use an elbow but a T, for the reason explained in the next step.

NOTE, August 2014: I should have used a thicker pipe, 1.5 or 2 inches. This works, but it would be better the other.

Step 5: El Cenicero (the Ashtray)

As I explained in step 2, it is necessary to remove the ash as it accumulates. That would not be possible if the furnace does not have a hole directly under the grate. The problem is easily solved using a T insert in the pipe that feeds the air.

But now comes the problem of keeping the T closed when the furnace runs, so that the air does not escape through it. To do this I installed a rocker which has at one end a steel plate to cover the pipe, and a lead counterweight at the other, lifting the plate and pressing it to the hole, to plug it. This rocker should be able to be locked in open position while starting the fire.

Step 6: Las Patas (the Legs)

My idea is to make a "desktop forge" for use over the base of my barbecue grill, or directly on the floor. So the legs should not be too long, about 30 cm. Moreover, almost all my projects should be designed with the possibility of being disassembled for storage. Therefore, the legs are bolted to the base. To give more stability to the forge, the three legs are connected with a triangle of 4 mm steel wire.

August 2014 NOTE: the legs were very short. In 2013, I extended them for the table be at a decent height. Otherwise my back hurts when stoop over.

Step 7: El Soplador (the Blower)

The air flow should be rather soft, otherwise it becomes counterproductive. I analyzed several alternatives:
  • A bellows, which may be single or double action
  • A piston in a cylinder of plastic, also single or double action
  • A cooler type fan, manual or electrically powered
  • A centrifugal fan, manual or electrically powered
Finally I chose the last option and the latter alternative: an electrically powered centrifugal blower. I used an old hair dryer from the '50 or '60, whose power is suitably low.

Step 8: El Regulador De Aire (the Air Flow Driver)

The air flow must be regulated easily and effectively. The easiest is a butterfly-type valve as used by car carburetors. I used a plastic tube from a cartridge of silicone sealant. Melting is not an issue because the blower/regulator assembly is about 2 feet from the fire. It is not necessary that the sealing is perfect, because if I want to completely cut the air, I can just turn off the fan.

Step 9: El Cemento Refractario (Refractory Cement)

I thought follow the mourits instructions but I finally decided to seek advice from local cement vendors. I got a modest amount for a few pesos (U$S 1.25), and it left over half. The mixture consists of four parts of ground ceramics, one of lime and half of cement. They suggested that I give it three days to harden, before putting on fire, which I obeyed.

Step 10: La Primera Prueba (the First Test)

The big day came, and everything went incredibly as I had expected. There were no explosions, no burns, nothing bad. The fire ignited quickly, aided by a gentle flow of air from the blower with fully closed throttle control. I put a construction iron of 10 mm, and in less than a minute was light red. I even could have melted the tip, but I didn't want force the furnace because the refractory cement could not resist, being very new, so after checking that all was well, put out the fire.

There was a problem, that I should have foreseen at design time: the coals fall to floor at moving the piece, for lack of a table around the bowl. That is easily fixed.

Step 11: La Mesa (the Table)

I thought to buy a piece of metal sheet, but I remembered that among my things was a PC case cover. I looked it and saw that their measures are perfectly suited to the need. I marked the center, then draw a circle the size of the bowl, and instead of make the hole using the jig I decided to make many radial cuts with the hand grinder, so that bending out the segments, the hole was formed and strengthened the plate.

I had to make three indentations in the plate to hold the three wires that hold the ceramic bowl in the iron cage. Then I made three holes through which passed each separate screws, which screwed to pieces of L iron that be soldered to the bowl cage.

I probably also need to add legs to the table, but I will do it if after using the forge a while I see that is really necessary.

Step 12: Coal or Charcoal? (carbn Mineral O Vegetal?))

Since Argentina isn't a producer of coal, here is not easy to achieve it. It has the advantage of a much higher calorific value, but is much more expensive than charcoal. In short, I will use charcoal, except I can get cheaper coal.

Added in August 2011: walking the railroad tracks that pass near my home I was able to collect 5.6 kg of coke in a few blocks!

Step 13: Cortafierro (chisel)

In August 2011 I made a nice chisel in a while, starting from a used buffer car rod.
