Look here: http://i.crackedcdn.com/phpimages/photoshop/3/3/1/22331_slide.jpg?v=1 This would be cooler though, if it was A.)More rounded. Possibly putting rounded chromed steel on there. B.)Smaller-Its a floor lamp, not a pillar. Would there be a way to make it smaller and more compact?

SMALLER?. A) Use 20 W neon lamps...they are shorter than the 60W shown in the article. B) Better! .. use 8 W neon lamps, its lenght is ONE FEET including caps. Enough shorter for you?... YES you're right... light dimms at shorter lengths, but all is about the use you make of it.

Can you put a dimmer on these?

No but you could add a switch that turns on 1, 2, or all 3 lights.

No, you can't use a dimmer with fluorescent lights. If you do then they will just flicker.

Depends on the bulb, they sell dimmable cf spiral type bulbs. I have yet to see dimmable tube type cfs but they must exist.

Awesome Instructable.

Well, technically there are Electronic Dimming Ballasts, but these only drop the voltage (and light output) some to decrease power consumption and increase lamp life.  They would be expensive for such an elegantly simple project.

An easy way to get softer light is just to diffuse it.  Sew some semi-transparent fabric into a cylinder.  I can imagine a cheap bedsheet or piece of burlap looking neat.  You could even rig it like a curtain - up or down.

And yes, a mini version of this would also look cool.  Use 2ft. fixtures with T5 (5/8 inch) light bulbs.

I think it would be awesome if you could find some kind of colored (blue's my pick) tube to put around the whole lamp, so it would make it slightly dimmer, and colorful, or at least a front shield  so it would let off light without making you go blind from the brightness, other than that awesome, easy, and cool instructable.

Nicely done! I think the colored tubes would be interesting indeed. Otherwise, I'd still want to put clear covers on the tubes just to add to their break resistance.

try it with some blacklight tubes! :D
