Nintendo Light Switch

Nintendo Light Switch

Recently I bought a couple of paper lantern lamps to improve the lighting in my tiny apartment. When I got them home I found out they both lacked a power switch. I decided to keep them, but I soon became annoyed with having to reach behind my bed to plug/unplug them. So in order to eliminate this daily nuisance I retrofitted a couple of wireless light switches to fit in side an old NES controller. Now I can control my lights using a single remote.

Ingredient:
1 NES  Controller
2 Wireless Light Switches
Duct Tape
Foam Padding
Some Scrap Pieces of Square Doweling Rod
Leatherman
Dremil with A Sander Attachment

Open Your Light Switch

Wireless light switches come in many forms. The type you need will have a receiver that plugs into a wall (along with your lamp) and a transmitter that looks like the remote for a car alarm. This kind of wireless light switch is typically around $20, but I have often found them on a clearance rack for $10-$15. For this project I bought two different controllers, one with a single button for ON and OFF and one with two buttons for either ON or OFF.

Open the plastic case of the wireless remote and remove the switch hardware. The switch hardware will be slightly larger than the space inside the NES controller. You will need to snip the very tip of the battery holders with the Leatherman for it to fit.

note: When you buy your wireless light switch bring along your NES controller. This way you can judge whether or not the switch will fit into your controller.
