Nintendo Zapper Laser

Nintendo Zapper Laser
This is my first instructible. I had just got my old nintendo from my parents house and the game wouldnt work so i tried to combine some parts that i had laying around. turned out pretty good and my cat loves it too. oh dont point the laser in anythings eyes. the diode is rated to 4.5 volts but i have 9 volts going to it so that might shorten the life a bit.

I know people are going to hate me for this but..... in SOME cases by getting a cat, dog, or any pet to chase a lazer or light can make them kinda skitzafrennic (really don't know how to spell) and they are always looking for the lazer or light and they become really had to take care of.

Don't flame it's just I have seen it happen and it was really sad.....

REALLY sad.

Thanks for this instructible, I'm gonna be making a blu-ray laser, and putting it in a zapper is a great idea!!!

Nice, I've got to give it a go.

if i can im gonna put a manly burning laser in :D

does it have to be a Nintendo gun can it be anything else liek another type of gaming gun?

It can be anything you can make a circuit in. Hell, it could even be a laser stapler if you wanted to. Just make sure there's room for a battery, wire, diode, and switch, and you're pretty much set.

laser stapler :O thats so awsome!!!! ill give it a go

cool idea. but your pictures break almost every rule of macro photography. Theres several great instructables on how to take better pictures, and this would greatly benefit from clearer photography.

would the laser hurt your eyes?
Aug 22, 2008. 1:58 PMnevermind1534 says:
Just about any laser can hurt your eyes. It looks like this one would.
Aug 24, 2008. 12:54 PMSunny124613 says:
yah,but what if the cat or dog just stared into the beam...
Oct 3, 2008. 8:16 PMDrZDA says:
then you would turn it off.

good to know
Jun 3, 2008. 6:17 PMmightywombat says:
If you used the space in the handle, you could add a sound FX circuit that would make cool ray gun zapping sounds when you pulled the trigger.
Oct 3, 2008. 8:17 PMDrZDA says:
if that's what gets you going then have fun.
Aug 24, 2008. 12:58 PMEnigmaMax says:
it would be cool to add flash chargers and a hercules/aries laser to it so it could be a real laser gun. and a bigger battery.
Aug 24, 2008. 11:34 AMCamarilla says:
Add an 82 Ohm resistor to the circuit, that will fix any problems with blowing out your diode.

i just made one of these and my cat LOVES it. She chased it around until she was tired. THANKS :D

dude i heard of a real lazer that burns stuff it burns soooo much electricity probobly like 50k wats in like 5 mins
Aug 19, 2008. 2:17 PMThe N3rD says:
it depends on how powerful. also, this is a real laser.
Jun 9, 2008. 7:25 PMNetReaper says:
can u elaborate how the wires connect? is it black wire, laser, battery, red wire, trigger ?
Jun 3, 2008. 4:18 PMswalker says:
wow....
May 16, 2008. 8:12 PM!Andrew_Modder! says:
cool! ...hmm woulda been cooler if u used a higher output diode (mabe 45mw??) so you could burn stuff
May 24, 2008. 7:01 PMNetReaper says:
it would drain the power fast, and it would be dangerous (legal?) could get u sued. BUT BURN BABY BURN!!!
May 24, 2008. 8:26 PM!Andrew_Modder! says:
so, if u could have a burning laser who cares how much it uses energy lol. dangerous yes, legal yes (you can actually buy way way way over the top strong burning ones), you could get sued just as anything els you could be sued for lol. and yes you could burn stuff with a powerful enof laser!
May 25, 2008. 5:13 PMNetReaper says:
wait, you could burn things from far away and no one would ever know who did it!
May 26, 2008. 7:03 PM!Andrew_Modder! says:
ya . but come on were not talking about at the laser 'point' there being fire for something crazy you'd see in a video game, but yes it would burn stuff lol heres a example on a 100mw laser http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=l1vlNpLq-Dg

(the more the mw, the more the burn)

ohh battery directly across laser diode without a resistor even? gotta be careful doing that, youll kill it if not careful. generally i think all reds are 4.5v the reason your 9v isnt killing the laser diode is because a 9v is made up of 6 button cell type cells all in series. these tiny cells just cant supply the current that the led is trying to draw from them at 9v so you get a beasty voltage drop. meaning, that your laser survives. but if you hooked it up to a 9v, or any voltage supply really, that has a higher current capacity then youll fry it in an instant. (e.g. a plug pack for charging your rc car or something) you should really put a resistor in there so as not to accidentally kill it. 10 ohm or so would prob do. but if the lasers arent expensive, and you dont have any resistors around... then meh. end of the day if it dies its only a red. still would be a waste though. nice job there anyway.

What the hell? Not a bad Instructable, actually very cool, but... Won't a 9v battery explode a laser diode? But still, WOW, awesome job! I look forward to trying this out if I can get the laser diode. Great job!!! +5/5 stars.

Thats even better, turn your nes zapper into a grenade

Cool! Great re-use for an otherwise outdated toy
May 18, 2008. 9:48 AMfortneja says:
I don't know about outdated. My NES zapper stills sees tons of use nearly every evening. Duck hunt all the way! Neat instructable though, even if it was done already.
May 22, 2008. 7:18 PMmarc92 says:
I second that motion! Duck Hunt is a classic.
