Nintendo Lunchbox
introNintendo Lunchbox
I had a broken NES, a rotary tool, two small hinges, some glue and Alpha
Flight's Sasquatch. What I ended up with was a lunchbox that gets all
kinds of funny looks. This is my first project, and kinda sloppy. I
only had about two hours to do the whole thing. I'm sure I'll improve
it over time (add a latch and file down the rough edges some more) but
for now, it holds my lunch admirably.

step 1Remove the guts
Opening the NES case and pulling out it's guts is pretty easy. Take out all the screws you can find and lift the parts out gently one at a time. The wires can be unplugge…

step 2Remove the wires
Removing the wires from the controller ports is a little more tricky. They will pop out with some effort, but you may just want to clip them off and file the sharper ends …

step 3Power and Reset buttons
Once you unscrew the circuit board that these are attached to, they pop off really easily. Save these so that you can glue them back into place later.

step 4The plastic posts
I wasn't ready for all these little plastic posts that are inside the bottom part of the case. I couldn't even fit a bag of chips in there like that.

step 5Rotary tool action
The best way I could think to deal with the posts was with gratuitously unsound use of a rotary tool and a a couple of cutting wheels. This was by far the longest part of …

Once the posts were cut off, I ground the nubs down with the rotary's sanding attachment. Now it's nice and roomy in there. I left the 6 larger posts intact since they we…

Adding hinges was pretty simple. Just mark where the holes should go and drill carefully with your smallest bit. The plastic is very pliable and the screws go in very nea…

step 8Test the hinges
Test it to make sure that it opens and closes smoothly. Mine didn't the first time and I had to reposition the hinges.
Also, notice the white boarder around the Power a…

Now put some lunch in there! You could be really silly and try to feed your sandwich through the old cartridge slot.

Finally, put your new lunchbox in the office fridge (into which it fits nicely) and wait for your coworkers' reactions.
| i dig the flavor, some ideas i was thinking about:
1) having the hinges on the back of the system, with some sort of
clasping mechanism with the power/reset buttons.
2) this hinge-in-back could also let you put a strap in the cartridge
slot for a handle.
3) any chance the hinges could be inside?
4) the red power LED for when its got food in it!
5) bonus points for some sort of sandwich protecting cartridge case
this is all just me being greedy, though. nice job either way.
|
| Actually, I believe that you would have to modify the slot so that it
would fit even a PB&J sandwich. The slot is just too thin that it
would probably only fit one slice of bread. Although, you could just
carry the slices in two separate slots and make the sandwich at school
or wherever. Nice idea though.
|
| I made this over the weekend when I was sick and the
slotworks really well with sandwiches. For me, the sandwich fits
perfectlyand if you cut the edges a bit, you can fit your sandwich in
one of thecartridge holders. hope that helped you.
|
| You can put an internal hinge in there. What you are looking for is
called a Continuous, or Piano, hinge.
You could also rig up a magnetic catch utilizing the power button.
The LED idea is cool too.
Good job Fluctifragus!
|
| I found the Piano hinges you were talking about at the hardware store.
It looks like they'll work, but I'd have to glue them onto the inside
rather than bolting, or I'll end up with nubs sticking out that will
catch on stuff.
Using the power button as a magnetic or spring latch is a bit beyond my
meager skills though. I'd love to see somebody else do it though!
|
| How does it stay shut? Do you have to just hold it carefully?
|
| This would be a cool bento!
|
| grate idea!!!But you to apart a nes dude!! i gess if it was
broken............
|
| I don't think i could bring myself to take apart a nes, broken or not. I
just cant do it!
I really want one though.. ohhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh
|
| The only problem is you can't bring it to school without having to
demonstrate it's lunchbox abilities.
|
| This is a great project to do in coordination with 1up's portable game
system. Now that case can do something useful! Its great, don't listen
to the haters.
|
| Now that is funny! I knew a friend who did something similar (major
computer geek). He took a dead printer, gutted it, and made it into his
lunchbox. Access food through the ink door, snacks through the
paper-tray (that stupid flip door that holds your paper for all the
world to see, well, his had room there for snacks and sodas.)
Was always funny to see a Canon printer in the fridge.
|
| Hmm... Nice!
But couldn't you put the hinges on the back of the NES so you open it
from the front and not the sides? that would look way cooler.
|
| What!? you destroyed your NES?! how can you do a such thing?
|
| if that nes wasnt broken i probably would've flipped out

LMAO, its awesome :D
now try to imagine your mom's face when she opend the refrigerator, and
then: "NES" :O
hahahhaha
|
| who's the guy helping with the tutorial in the pictures?
|
| Hey this was such a good and easy Instructable I just did it to my NES..
very funny, when I take it to school (substitute teacher) and the other
teachers get took back to the 1980's and like it they want one I am
thinking about selling mine to them. they said they would pay like 50
bucks for them ha ha just for the nostalgic appeal to it.
|
| haha ... sweet! ii should make one ...
|
| The Captian was here......
|
| You can get a NES emulator for any other gaming system.

Not that, in theory, this isn't a cool mod, but dude... you just ruined
an NES so you could put a sandwich in it. I don't care if it didn't
work. The price to repair the NES is not likely going to be more than
the amount of kittens you just killed by gutting it and putting it in
your fridge.

Who cares? A NES is sooo out of date.
I don't care what the haters say. This is a cool 'ible and people
should learn to appreciate things.
|
| lo lwho cares you get them for 10 bucks at cash converters and pawn
shops he can just buy another one
|
| well i'm sure the nes could still be repaired, it just wouldnt have a
case. i dont think the case is completely necessary for its operation
|
| excellent point, and being "8 bit" by using a nes for a lunch
box is neither cool nor retro nor funny. i feel like there are a million
other things you could do with a nes then gut it and stick it in the freezer
|
| play it, flip it on its side, and add a clock motor, thus making a
clock, sell it, place it on a shelf, and save it, decorate the outside
i.e. paint it, put googly eyes on it. i personally am saving it, but my
point was to say that is project is bad, and less creative than i
hoped...it is up to you to figure it out, if you like it, then more
power to you, but if you can think of more stuff, then do it...the nes
is a powerful thing...i thought of one more thing, place it on it's
side, and call it modern art
|
| 1. He couldn't play it, it was broken. 2. A clock's an ok idea. 3. You have good ideas, why don't you make an instructable. =D
|
| mine works, i just don't play it...maybe i can get my friend to donate his

every time you download music illegally the government kills a kitten.
gutting an NES means he killed 5.2 million kittens. plus that sandwich
looks petty nasty so thats another 2 million. and i cat tell what that
fruit is so there goes another 500,000.ok so now he just killed 7.7
million and some extras for illegal downloads he may have done.

death count: 17.7 million kittens

ORGANIC?!?!?!?!?!?!?!? make that 20 million then!
total: 37.7 million kittens
|
| That's like Half the entire cat population in America. At this rate cats
should have been extinct 7 months ago.

they are beyond repair.

A NES is worth like £5 unboxed. Even less for just the system.
We're not going to have a shortage because of the increase in demand of
weird lunchboxes
