Fake blood can be a real challenge---too red, too clear, too...fake. But this recipe is thick, you don't have to cook, is totally safe to eat and not too many ingredients -- unfortunately they probably won't be found right in your cupboard unless you live w/ grandma. So sometimes its easier to buy fake blood capsules and be done but if that's not feasible cuz it's 3am or you live in a small town, go to the grocery store and make this.

Credits: This recipe is inspired by horror- sci-fi Troma film director, Lloyd Kaufman's recipe in his book "Make Your Own Damn Movie." Unfortunately his didn't do it for me so, thanks Lloyd, I had to Make My Own Damn Fake Blood recipe too.

You know if you add flavoring it would taste so bad. Like say you were to use this as a drink for a vampire or such

Add caffeine powder and then you'll get a rush from drinking it :D

Just a suggestion, but to get the blood darker without having to use a boat-load of red dye, try adding a little bit of chocolate syrup or chocolate sauce. It adds some darkness to the mixture AND improves the flavour! (Provided you like chocolate, that is.)

i havent yet tried using this, and i was just wondering would it be cheaper for me to buy all the ingrediants to make this or just buy the blood capsules?? and if i did choose to make this, would any of the ingrediants irritate my eczema??

I've used maple syrup and it worked really well, the darkness of it actually helps with getting the "blood" colour right.

its not, there two different things

they dont sell corn syrup here in the uk, but you can use liquid glucise as a substitute
rustyjack says: Oct 20, 2010. 3:19 PM
HA can you use maple syrup as an alternative just for taste wise?

hey with the flour what type of flour is it

Yeay it's that time of year again! "White" is the best answer I can give you. We just had cheapo flour & a fancy container for it. I'm sure any kind of basic flour or corn flour would work to thicken the blood. Good Luck!

just saying, red food coloring will stain clothes and skin and for skin it takes a while to get off. u cant get it off of clothes.

If memory serves, a small amount of dishsoap will remedy this. It will also, however, ruin the edibility. Unless you're into that kinda thing.

copycatfilms (author) in reply to a.nony.mouseJul 17, 2008. 1:58 PM
HA! yes! My mom used to sell it so I have a lot of her leftover stock and she still supports friends who sell it, so I put in an order ever once in a while. Gotta love the slanted measuring cups, the quick-stir pitcher and the non-aerosol cooking sprayer!

Good tutorial. If you want to stretch your recipe out a bit, chocolate syrup is usually a good additive to darken the blood.
Weissensteinburg says: Jul 29, 2007. 7:56 PM
Oh great, we have all the ingredients, I guess my mom is actually my grandmother.

Do I here the strains of Duelling Banjos in the background?

No, Because it is not found.... : )

I did this years ago and it was good, but sticky. And I HATE sticky. I'm almost positive it was the same recipe too, but maybe I'm wrong and this isn't as sticky.
Weissensteinburg in reply to JakeTobakJul 29, 2007. 8:49 PM

awsome!
Kiteman says: Jul 30, 2007. 7:06 AM
This would make a great filling for chocolates!

Idle thoughts:

  • Would a little water in the mix make it more fluid, suitable for other wounds?
  • If people have trouble getting the colour right (they keep adding too much blue), then making a much larger batch will actually make life easier - one drop will have less effect on the shade.
  • Now you need an Instructable on making/filling capsules that can be bitten on cue.

Oh, and an Instructable entitled "How to make a short film" would be good to see as well.
copycatfilms (author) says: Jul 29, 2007. 11:56 PM
Thanks for the comments. Yes it's sticky - which is why I wouldn't want to use it for anything other than vampire mouth -though Kaufman claims he uses it for all of his Troma blood. Those interested should experiment with flour and cornstarch for thickness and try other substances like tomato products with food colorings and let us know. Every gore movie or blood sucking creature costume should have a variety of bloods to choose from!
