Introduction: No Sew Duct Tape IPhone Case

Picture of No Sew Duct Tape IPhone Case

Inspired by the popularity of the No-Sew Duct Tape Wallet and the No-Sew Duct Tape Zipper Pouch, I decided to create a No-Sew Duct Tape iPhone Case!  Of course, you can modify this style to fit any phone, or use it for something else entirely.  This version is the simplest of them all, and a great introduction to the rest of the series!

This project is inspired by  Simply Sublime Bags by Jodi Kahn

Step 1: Materials

Picture of Materials
For this project you need:
  • Fabric - size determined by the size of your phone, but 8x10 is a good default
  • Duct tape
  • Stapler
  • Staples
  • Scissors

Step 2: Tape Fabric

Picture of Tape Fabric

Begin by placing strips of duct tape along the back side of the fabric.

Slightly overlap the strips of tape.

Peel the fabric off the table and trim off the excess tape around the edges.

Step 3: Turn Edges

Picture of Turn Edges

Place a strip of tape across the two short edges on the right side of the fabric.

Turn the fabric over so the taped side is facing up.

Fold the short edges over so and tape down so that a little bit of the fabric shows on each edge.

Trim off excess tape.

Step 4: Staple Sides

Picture of Staple Sides

Measure the pocket for your case by wrapping the fabric around your phone as in picture 1, making sure the fabric sides are facing each other ("right sides together").

Staple along both sides of the pouch along the full length of tape, as in pictures 2 and 3.

Step 5: Cover Staples

Picture of Cover Staples

Place a piece of tape along the entire length of the sides you just stapled, making sure the fabric is facing you.

Fold the taped edges over along the staple line so you are folding back about 1/2" of the fabric, and tape down.

Either trim the edges of the tape and skip to step 7 or fold under the bottom tape to the other side, and leave the tape at the top long for an envelope finish, and proceed to step 6.

Step 6: For Envelope Flap

Picture of For Envelope Flap

Fold the two edges towards the middle.

Roll the remaining tape under the flaps, so it works sort of like double sided tape.

Press down corners to adhere.

Step 7: Finish

Now for the magic!

Turn the whole thing right side out.  Use the point of your scissors to help poke out the corners.

If you like, add sticky velcro tabs for closure.  I've found the sticky tabs adhere really well to the duct tape side, but need to be stapled down to the fabric side.

You're done! Wasn't that fun?

Post a picture of your own in the comments and I'll reward you with a 3-mo Pro membership!

is that a waterproof fabric?

Its a regular fabric, however I guess it becomes water proof once you use the duct tape. Hope that helps your query :)

I found your instructable, and thought it was the perfect idea for the Christmas season! So I decided to make a bunch as presents for people using peppermint fabric. They turned out really nice! :)

I was looking for immediate protection for my brand new iPhone 5, and this worked great! Now if I can only find a way to make one to protect it from kid drops! ;)

(did you get your 3-mo Pro code?)

I forgot to mention materials. The fabric was in a discount basket at Walmart (less than $3) and the Duct tape was at the big W. too.

I just bought neoprene fabric to make a rain guard for my backpack and had plenty extra, so it was perfect to make a waterproof phone case. Plus, i have awesome mustache duck tape handy for all occasions, so i appreciate the accessibility of items needed for this project. Thanks for sharing this wonderful idea! :)

Here we go! I didn't have any velcro on hand so I just used some elastic to hold it together.

This is too cool! Incredibly convenient for those times when the only thing you need is your phone and maybe a credit card or some cash.... no need to carry a bulky wallet or a purse!
