This dessert pizza is a great way to finish a dinner party or even to make just for yourself. It is so warm, crunchy and gooey with chocolate! You will not regret trying this out. I saw this at the Italian restaurant near my house and I wanted to make it ever since because it looked to die for (and I was right it is!!)
There are so many variations you can do for this for the toppings such as:
- Add marshmallows, kiwi fruit, chocolate sauce
- No fruit topping and just the Nutella.
The possibilities are almost endless!!
Step 1: Ingredients and Equipment
For the Pizza Dough (Or use a store bought pizza base)
- 1 Cup plain flour (Plus extra for rolling the dough)
- 1/2 Tablespoon caster sugar
- 1/4 teaspoon salt
- 1/2 sachet (4 grams) dry active yeast
- 1/2 Cup warm water (NOT boiling as you can kill the yeast)
- Nutella (chocolate hazelnut spread)
- Icing sugar
- Any additional toppings
- Baking Tray
- Glad wrap
- Baking paper
- Rolling Pin
- Medium metal bowl (and a warm area to let the dough rise)
- Large mixing bowl (to mix the dough)
- Fork and butter knife
- Fan Forced oven
Step 2: Make the Dough
So the dough should be made about an hour before you want the pizza as it needs to rest and double in size in a warm area (alternatively you could use a store-bought pizza base). In the large mixing bowl add the sugar, salt and yeast to the plain flour and stir with the knife. Slowly add the warm water to the dry ingredients and mix to combine (add extra water if you need it to hold together better).
Step 3: Knead the Dough
Once the dough has been mixed sprinkle some flour on your table and place the dough on it. Then add some flour on top of the dough and knead it for a few minutes until the dough comes together and holds its shape. This took me about 3 minutes to do.
Step 4: Oil the Bowl and Cover the Dough
In the metal bowl pour and wipe olive oil around the sides and bottom of the bowl. This helps prevent the dough from getting stuck to the bowl when it is rising. Place the dough in the bowl and cover with glad wrap and place in a warm place for about 1 hour or until the dough doubles in size.
Step 5: Prepare Your Toppings
While your dough is rising prepare your pizza toppings. For me I thinly sliced a banana and some strawberries. If you are using bananas do not cut them too far in advance otherwise they will brown due to exposure to the air.
You can choose as many or as little toppings as you wish but they will not be cooked on the pizza you add them at the end before you serve it.
Step 6: Roll Out and Bake the Dough
Once the dough has doubled in size place it onto a floured surface and knead it for a minute to release the air that has accumulated into the dough. Then roll it out into an even circle with the rolling pin then place it onto the baking tray lined with baking paper. Heat your oven to 190 degrees Celsius (for fan forced oven). Then with your fork puncture the dough multiple times evenly around the dough, this prevents the dough rising unevenly. Then bake the dough for about 7-10 minutes until it goes slightly golden brown.
Step 7: Decorate the Pizza
Once the dough has been cooked, while it is warm spread the Nutella spread onto the pizza (as much or as little as you want). Then top with any other desired toppings. I find bananas and strawberries work really well with Nutella because they also taste delicious with melted chocolate. To give it a nice finish dust with some icing sugar and serve immediately while still warm.
